The NSS8 was the predecessor to the B&G series.  It has the possibility to accomodate different echosunders ( forward looking, fish detection ... ) and is software wise prepared for it. Normally you only use the data from the Airmar transducer and you have a reliable depth info straight down.

B&G is same hardware since 2014 but has the additonal sailing functions built in. It is markeetd to the sasiling community , Hanse has chosen it since 2015 as standard.
NSS has been replaced by the NS Evo series and is marketed to wards the power boat market.

Simrad has offered in 2016 a trade - in for older NSS models.

The Zeus hardware is almost identical to the NSS8. However, there must be some slight variance between them as the Zeus software will not run on the NSS8. A couple of years ago I loaded the Zeus software into my NSS8 without problem. However, it would not run so there mus be some check during boot-up that it is a Zeus unit. Disappointing as I was hoping to use the extra sailing functions in the Zeus.

Has the Simrad trade in deal for the NSS8 stopped now? I never saw it advertised in the UK. Maybe I miss it?

Many thanks for all your quick reply. So the conclusion is that :
- Echo option in my Simard NSS8 is currently useless (even in their brochure says is build-in, and not in NSS12)
- If I want to convert my Echo in something that brings value, I should add proper echosounder sensor
- Last option is to replace the NSS8 for B&G more suitable for sailing

Many thanks again for your quick reply's

Albert

I just replaced my NSS8 with the B&G Zeus3 12 inch plotter and have been very happy. The Zeus3 is a huge upgrade in functionality and ease of use, and the 12 inch screen is more easily seen from the two helms. It was a big expense, but I have no regrets. I sold the old NSS8 on eBay for $400, so that paid for a small part of my upgrade.
