We are building a 575 due to be completed this May. I'm wondering if any other 575 owners out there have made mods to the stern setup (wire lifelines rather than enclosed railing)?
Some of the people I sail with might be uncomfortable with just the wire there. I know that there is the hinged stern and "garage" access to deal with, but outside of putting foam and sunbrella wire cushions on them, are there examples of things owners have done that we could consider? Pictures would obviously be appreciated. Rick S/V Black Diamond Portsmouth, RI |

Rick,
After 9,000nm sailed on our boat we decided this year to replace the aft wire lifelines with 6mm Dyneema lines. This was not due to finding the wire lifeline did not offer enough security for us but when at anchor with all the aft lifelines open we found they rubbed on the edge of the stern and left marks which needed to be polished off. We have however fitted jack stays in a T shape from the saloon access hatch entrance and between the steering wheels. There are pad eyes factory fitted in these positions. We also have the helm seat option which offers the person at the helm a bit more security. When overnight sailing with only one on watch , which is normal, we are always attached by our harness to the cockpit jack stays. I have seen some 575 owners who have fitted a solid handrail in the middle of the transom which is attached to the opening deck section. I gather this folds flat when you want to lift the deck section to access the garage.
