Anyone fitted a gybe preventer to their 470. Advise please on how to rig it. On last big boat I used a boom break which worked really well but the 470 is so much lighter I think I’d be better off with a preventer.

Hi, I fitted a leash over a block in the Bow to one of the cleats in the middle. If you're going downwind in 20kn + it's really helpful to save the Crew, the Main and the Boon, even in higher waves....

HI
We did fit a boom preventer AND a boom break as a preventer is of no help when gybing. The preventer is rigged at the end of the boom, goes to a low friction ring fitted near the bow pulpit and back to the cockpit on a Spinlock cleat. Alain |

Thanks for that but if you haven’t used a boom preventer then I wouldn’t knock them. For the past 7 years I have run a 22 ton 47 footer with students on board and the boom preventer has prevented many an accidental jybe when teaching down wind sailing. I was just considering a preventer because the Hanse 470 is so much lighter and might be better suited to the albeit more work involved system.
Many thanks |
