Hi

We have had our selftaking Jib come apart this week, the UV strip down the leach came unstiched and we have a rip across the sail about 1 mt down from the head. Its now at the sail makers awaiting a repair.

After 9 years of neglegt its looking worse for wear so I was thinking of changing it for an Elvstrom Fatfurl self tacker with vertical battens. Has any one got one of these sails and if so can you give some feed back on its performance and what sail cloth you have it made of?

Thanks

Ken

WE changed to a vertical batten jib 3 years ago. The motoring on the leach disappeared so a real improvement. I gave the measurement to a sail designer and organised a sail from China where I have connections so it was a great deal all around. Vertical battens, YES

I changed to Elvstrøm fat furl this spring. So far it works very well. Big difference from the old North.

Hi Ken
I had a 110% jib made by Sanders sails with vertical battens a couple of years ago, not a self tacker but designed to sheet between the shrouds .
It was a big improvement in light winds, however we lost some pointing ability and as every where we go is to windward it mattered .
This season we are back to our original, but refurbished self tacker and a code zero on a continous line furler, this setup seems to best for us.

Thanks for the feed back, I am waiting for a price back from Elvstrom but a local sail maker can also produce these sails.

I think a good self tacker and a code Zero is the way to go,  in anything over 13 knots apparent and up to the low 30 knots the self tacker and a reefed main perform very well. Its only in light winds that the sail plan let you down and a code zero I think will fill that gap in performance.

I will keep on putting the pennies away.
