My 2006 Hanse 370 (hull #9) has a Sparcraft mast. Does anyone know the specific model #? My new main is hanging up on the backstay and I've asked Sparcraft if the masthead crane can be extended aft.  Anyone done that?  Other solutions?

Most simple solution is the back stay flicker, simple batten that projects back from the crane holding back stay out until its pulled on and the flicker bends.

Highly recommend Stephen's solution.
The problem is caused by a main that has more roach - a common problem when area is added to the mainsail. Getting hung up on the backstay is also more of an issue with light wind. I new this was going to be a problem when we commissioned Rubato 10 years ago and used a PBO backstay instead of wire. The intent was that it would be lighter and easier to flick around the mainsail when tacking if needed. I had limited success with it. More recently, I've changed all the lower backstay adjust wire and blocks to dyneema along with lead rings. This has helped a lot, lightening up the total mass of the backstay so it's easier to flick around the mainsail. However, if you can avoid all that with the use of a flicker, go for it!!!

Like Rubato i also replaced the entire backstay arrangement with Dyneema, used a Karver block at the base of the main drop and friction rings for the lower cascades.

The factory wire back stay is over sized and the combined weight of the factory setup is significant, good to reduce the weight aloft.

I recommend an outer protection sleeve on the main drop which reduces wear on the Dyneema as main flicks through.

Thanks all.  For some reason my sailmaker recommended against a flicker.  I'll discuss it with him tomorrow.  What size dyneema did you ude to replace the backstay?

I've talked with Sparcraft.  Not surprisingly, they do not recommend adding to or changing the crane (which is actually afitting that extends fore and aft of the mast and is welded in place). They weren't familiar with flickers (surprisingly) but that is going to be my solution.  RBS makes an epoxy coated flicker that I'll have my rigger install shortly.  Should do the trick.

6mm for the main drop and first section from stern, 5mm for the rest.
