In this forum are there several discussions threads about how to address issues with moisture in the mattresses, some recommends expensive solutions and other more cost effective ones.

I prefere to spend my money in a smart way so I really want this “ventilation net” to work but “Samuel” did share his experience in another thread; his impressions is that this doesn’t work.

Other experiences?

I have found several internet posts in Swedish around this;

  • put a camping foam mat on top of the “ventilation net” (condensation is related to temperature and humidity)
  • increase temperature in the space below the mattress by adding ventilation to it
  • increase air ventilation by drilling holes in the innerliner below the mattress

Have any of you tested a combination like that?

I think that it is very important to keep as much moisture out of the mattresses during the winter periods by using a dehumidifier. I'm sure that this gives the mattresses a better chance over the sailing season.

Nothing is fool-proof however and good ventilation is all important throughout the year.

John

I might also add that I take my cusions home in the winter & the wife gives them a good clean so they start off really clean & dry We would never leave cusions on a boat once it has been laid up
However, within a month of use they get damp on the underside
To reduce this, if I am not living aboard, I turn the aft & bow mattresses on their sides to air
I have not let them get damp enough to get mildew, but all the zips have rusted & some of the zippers have fallen off. My solution to this has been to sew the zips together to stop them unzipping.
If I live aboard for long they get very damp on the underside & occasionally start to smell (inspite of the underlayer)so we turn them up & spray with Fabreeze every few days

I found this product at IKEA. Should be simple to cut and make fit for different bed sizes. Not expensive for a 90 x 200 cm it is priced in Norway to 295 nok, should be equivalent to approx 38 EUR. The product is called Sultan Lødingen Ribbebunn, but probably got another name in other countries.

It seems as the picture load up function does not work to night, but here is the link

Trouble with this system is that the saloon cusions are no longer located o the velcro pads so fall on the floor when the boat heels unless some other form of fixing is provided
Plus in the fore & aft cabin you cannot easily get to the storage bins unless the pieces are cut to the shape of the lids. Then they all fall apart like fire wood so are useless unless glued to the lids

Samuel
I don’t disagree with you, but as always you win some and loose some Smile In the 411 fore cabin the room underneath the bed is not for use, all space is taken by fresh water and bow thruster, so only need access once a year.

My idea was cut and tailor it, may be with the 140 x 200 in the middle and two smaller unit on the sides. Make it as 3 frames which can be removed.
