Best advice, Move somewhere warmer...................with so much money invested in your boat be somewhere were it can stay in the water all year round, you can use it all year round and where it doesn't freeze.

just saying!

I always empty the water system since I don't whant to have anything else than water in my system. You might not get it out completely since in the boiler everything mixes up.

Open the taps until no water comes anymore, take of the hoses of the pump and than take your dinghy air pump and pump the rest of the water (a lot!!!) out of the boiler. It takes 20min. But you are safe in the end.

I once opend just the taps until no water came BUT: the boiler was broken after the winter since too much water stayed in it!

Was the boat in the water or on land?

I have never had any problem when the boat stays in sea... YET!!

In our Canadian cold, I also drain my hot water tank, disconnect the cold and hot water conduits and loop them together with hose and fittings. I than circulate a few liters of RV antifreeze. By doing this, my hot water tank doesn't keep the taste of antifreeze and use less of it. Don't forget the shower drain or water in the toilet bowl.

Thomas,

I don't think this will empty the boiler sufficiently, I just tried your proposal with an airpump, got a few liters of water out of the pipes but almost nothing out of the boiler. I assume one just forces air bubbles going through the boiler tank but the water will remain inside. When I connected a pressure pump at the lower outlet of the boiler I still could suck almost the full content out of the boiler. Sucking water directly off the lower (overpressure valve) outlet of the boiler is the only reliable method.

Best

Unless you live far north, You worry too much.
If she stays in the water it is not cold enough to damage the system and you don't need to empty the whole system.
Just shut off water pump, leave all taps opened and open the heater drain until water stops flooding.  Do not forget to get the aft shower as high as possible and open it to allow it to drain and air to get inside the system.
Then there's enough air in the system even if it freezes a bit (approx -5 °C).  During the hardest winter we had in recent years (sea water frozen in harbour) I had only a 1 cm layer of ice abvove the water in the tank.  No damage to the system.
This procedure allows me to keep fresh water in tank and live aboard during some winter weekends.

You don't need to be far north to get a freeze during the winter. I had a burst hot water tank on my previous boat which was over-wintered ashore near LA Rochelle. Now I am based in Greifswald I have W&R drain out the water systems. They use a vacuum to suck out the water from the hot water tank and all pipes and I was suprized at the volume they recover. They also add antifreeze to the toilet.
