That's good to get it sorted out with 2000 or so miles in front of you. Interesting and useful information about the washer.

Hope you are enjoying something of the D Day celebrations while in Cherbourg. There is a fort atop a hill about half an hours walk from the marina which is an interesting visit. Just below the fort on the way up to it is a series of gun emplacements (no guns now unfortunately) connected by a network of tunnels. You have to don a safety helmet with lamps to explore on a guided tour. Very interesting and fantastic views. Do it if you have a chance.

Correction.  My comments were about Yanmar saildrives and it seems Volvo have quite a different view on the oil.
Talking to a Yanmar guy at Inverkip last year, he said to use their recommneded oil as they had found that automobile type oils had caused them problems on the Yanmar Saildrive clutch plates.  A engineer looking at my boat said that he thought I may have got a very small amount oil water into my Saildrive as the drain oil plug was not over tight.  Perhaps this is one O ring we should change every time we change the oil as it seems rather critical.

I am having a nightmare organising repairs.
I arrived last Friday & earliest local volvo can do is next Monday at exhorbitant cost. Furthermore i am not convinced about ability of the engineer
Volvo france do not have all the spares so i ordered them via Volspec in uk
They said goods would arrive at a friends house on thursday but they came wednesday when he was out. Goods are now on hold in paris with no way of contacting them as they did not leave a despatch note
I have decided to change the drain plug o ring only & change oil myself on friday & have paid for a one hour lift out then carry on to st peterport. If problem solved then great so fingers crossed. As for goods in france - who knows probably lost at cost to me as i am moving on if i can get them before saturday then i will be able to do job myself somewhere along the line - hopefully uk- if the drain plug seal os not the issue

samuel - see this article http://svocelot.com/Cruise_Info/Equipment/SailDrives.htm re adding an external oil tank to a Saildrive to balance the pressure causing seawater ingress.  Haven't tried it but the logic seemed good.

Fingers crossed -- success
Changed the plug washer for a neoprene one ( not the right one but a portapotti spare did the trick
Also thought the thread was a bit coarse so used lots of PTFE tape so it became harder to screw in
By the time the oil rots the PTFE i should be home
I have seen the article re header tank but volvo are adamant that tank should not be overfilled
I also notice that when i remove filler cap there is always negative pressure. This must tend to suck water past the seals.
Pressumably hot oil expands pushing oil out & then ss it cools a vacuumn is created
Anyone else notice this - always had it from new
Any way a £ 120-00, 1 hour haul out for a 50p washer!!

Holby

We missed you in Loch Ranza before your weekend do, as we did not feel like motoring there in the rain.
If I remember correctly, you are going up to Glasgow next week.  We are back on our boat in Largs on Tuesday, so do you have an intinerary for the next few days.
The Flying Dutchmens are racing from Largs this week, so there may be some good views.

Hi Martin,
We will be setting of from Stranraer heading to Rhu Marina on Wednesday 23rd July / Thursday 24th July... The idea is to be at James Watt Marina for Friday 25th to prepare for the Commonwealth Wealth Flotilla on Saturday and then on Sunday head down to Ardrossan.
So probably miss the racing from Largs.... Its a great place to race form as I have raced Lasers there many years ago.
Will keep my eyes open for you. Out of interest do you/ have you come across a Hanse called Time out?
