Sam - I see from AIS, that you had a little foray into the Firth this morning. Hope everything is ok. Have you met up with any other Hanses yet? Was weather good for the trip through Calledonian Canal.

I was a little light on the suncream in the canal. & am now suffering. The weather was great.
As usual all the canal staff were great & helped. In the last lot of locks - the Muirtown flight i was told i could not go port hand side as a large holiday barge was coming through & needed port hand.
One of the bridge keepers radioed him & arranged for me to tie up against the barge & it took me through whilst i just sat & chatted to the people on board. Everyone just being extremely friendly

You will have seen what happened in the firth by my other post, although i really cannot believe that such a light grounding could cause the rudder to split so easily. Thinking back i did catch the rudder in the canal when i was turning, the back swung out & the rudder caught on the sloping bank so perhaps that started it off
I am just grateful i was not further along the coast where the expected northerly would have had me on the rocks in no time.
I assume you are back from your scillies trip. Hope the wind played ball & blew from the west. It certainly blew every way except the way i needed it .

I did see a couple of Hanse's but no one on board. It is surprising how few i have seen on the whole trip. Perhaps they have heard about my cheepo scotch & are hiding

Having had the rudder repaired i sailed straight to peterhead then arbroath & on to Eyemouth
There my progress was halted as the huge swell coming from the north funnelled into the bay & was causing 2 metre breakers at right angles to the harbour entrance. To make matters worse you cannot see them coming as you exit because of the wall.
On tuesday they were actually curling & breaking level with the wall. Normally they are just swell & break after the entrance. & on to the beach
Yesterday the tide was low & the rocks in the bay broke up some of the swell so i decided that after a week i would give it a go
The good old harbour master stood on the point with his VHF & told me to go slow in the exit channel & then as there was a bit of a lull he told me when the next breaker was coming & as soon as it passed he told me to go.
The exit was a bit rough but ok. I am just glad i did not get caught in one of the breakers as they may have swept me up the beach.
The trip to blyth was down wind in a 2-3 metre swell coming from the continued storms up north
As i approached Blyth i lowered sails & motored. It was low tide & the entrance channel is dredged to 9 metres but one has to cross shallower water to get to it when coming from the north
At the time i was in 20 metres when suddenly i felt the boat tip forward. I looked back to see what i can only call a rogue wave. It just got bigger & bigger. I surged forward & was doing 9.9 knots when i last looked i looked back & saw it was about to curl & break. I kept the boat straight & waited for it to break in the cockpit & i got soaked
After that i realised i was now in 6 fathoms so i assume the drop in depth caused it i looked but did not see sny more anything like it
Oddly enough i was not in the least bit worried about the wave only that i did not have my camera
I am sure Atlantic sailors see this all the time but a sunny day in the north sea is not where one expects it
The last time i saw waves as big was in a F 9 in 1976

What an experience Sam. Dead calm when I was doing those waters.   Don't think I fancy what you experienced.

Where next, Hartlepool? If you do, fuel and gas is cheap at the harbour. Also, the old Sailing ship and it's surroundings in the far corner of the marina are worth a visit and food there is cheap as chips.

Yup!! In Hartlepool now until this wind eases off then it is Scarborough
The marina looked full last time I was here & all the shops looked busy. Now the marina has - at a guess- 30% empty spaces & some of the shops have shut down

It was hard work down the east coast
As for Holland, my daughters holiday was this week so there is no time to go before she has to go back to work. Loosing my rudder meant that I missed the paulufestein & Belgian national firework championships in Ostend & the wife &daughter did not get the promised  holiday
I have some making up to do!!!!!
