What is yor experience?
I think you only need to reduce after one, or maybe two, mainsail reefs..is that correct? Is there a limitation? I have facnor furler. thanks |

Up wind I do not furl my ST until absolutely necessary. Certainly not until after second reef.
I could hold my dacron ST's up to F8 Ok, but last year I purchased a laminate ST & this has a lot more power. So far I have not had it in a F8 upwind only in 30kt gusts but I suspect that I may have to furl it if it gets windier. However, I try not to sail upwind in anything over F6 for long because as I get older I get less inclined to like sailing on my ear. Off the wind I would normally furl it altogether if very windy as I hate sailing with part furled forsails |

I very rarely reef my job, I have three reefs in the main and even if I am fully reefed on the main I would not normally reef the jib. Boat is well balanced in this state with very little weather helm. My boat is 341. In 20,000 miles I have only reefed the jib twice that I can remember.

We have never reefed the Jib so far. As we are sailing a fatfurl Jib in Epex, reefing would lead a bad sail profile. When we replaced the mainsail, we have taken reef 1 in between the usual reef 1 and 2. Reef 2 is where you usually find reef 3.
So we reduce to reef 1, than to reef 2, then we take the main away. If this is not good, we take the jib away and set the main in reef 2. As the last resort, we carry a coversail jib with about 8qm - we never used it so far and I do not want to be at sea when it is required to use it. If more than gusts of 25 knots are forecasted, we stay in port. Upwind we take 20 knots as the limit, unless in protected areas, where no waves / fetch comes in. Jan

Have played around with reefing the jib but without success. The best balance seems to be to leave the jib alone and reef the main only. we have a 3rd reef and this goes in with full jib. This is effective up to F7-8 but not sailed in anything over that so far.
