Many of us have had these units fail as they are very sensitive to lightning.

The Simrad 508 was redesignated as a BandG Triton 508. I've just had a Simrad 508 replaced after 18 months under warranty.

As I'd heard that Navioco were replacing these units outside of the 2 year warranty period due to their unreliability I phoned Navico UK to ask what warranty was left on this replaced unit. Initially the guy said 6 months. When I said I'd had 2 of these units fail in a short time he asked where the boat was located. When I said the Med he changed his tune. He said he never had this conversation with a UK located boat owner. He then suggested that with a Med located failed unit they would be reasonable & gentlemanly about replacing it. From this I took it to mean they might replace outside the warranty period. They are well aware of the problem in the Med with lots of lightening.

My replacement unit is a Triton 608 & he confirmed that it has been redesigned to make it more reliable.

Hello!
As my boat was located in the Med I disassembled my Unit from the Masttop when I was longer time not onboard. So, be aware about the lightening.....
best regards

I too have removed mine for the winter as I see no point in it spinning round for 5/6 months let alone the possibility of it being blown by lightning. In fact when I read the fitting instructions Navico recommend that this should form part of the regular extended storage/non-use procedure for the boat. My last unit came with a rubber cap on a tether to seal the plug once the unit is removed. To ensure this item lasts & doesn't perish I'll remove it when the wind sensor is refitted.
