Hello,

I will be very grateful if anyone knows the measures for the slides of my sail, or the model of any brand that suits in my spar.

I have order a new sail and came with wrong sliders , bigger and hard to move. I gave the old one to somebody who can not contact.

Thank you very much.

Surely this is your sail lofts problem.
I find it hard to believe they just sewed in slides of a random size.
I am afraid I cannot help you as I had this https://www.ronstan.co.uk/marine5/SAbattensystems.asp system installed a couple of years ago to make it easier for my wife to raise and drop the sail.
It,s not over till the fat lady drowns

Redlion, many thanks for your help.

Sorry I could not reply before, for health problems ( now OK).

North Sail put on my mainsail slides Selden A015 ( SM-1336), when now I know the proper size is A014 (SM-1335), a bit smaller. It looks strange  they did it , but is true

Finally, and thanks to your advice, I have put wagons slider Rutgerson 1525-11 (four wheels), that work very well, maybe not as well as your system, but you do not need to make any change in the mast.

Thanks again!

My mainsail has never been "easy" to hoist and when I lower I always need to go forward and pull down the last 2/3 meters of sail. I find it easier after rainfall as it lubricates the track so it's obviously a friction problem. The slugs look OK and I have used the likes of "MacLube" without much luck so I'd like to solve the problem for ever.

I looked at the pressure absorbing slides from Rutgerson (See antartida's quote above) which are only sold through dealers, one of which I'm currently awaiting a response for price and availability. In the meantime is there anyone out there that has resolved a similar problem relatively cheaply?

Cheers

You can work at improving the existing track (by (a) get a sail slug, wrap it with a light weight cloth, spray cloth with a lube and usining your halyard and a messenger line, move it up and down the entire track; and/or (b) replace the intermediate sail slides with the more sllppery kind; and/or (c) replace the full batten ends/slugs with an upgrade) OR replace the slide with a Strong Tides Track system.  I've heard nothing but great reports on the Strong Tides Tracks which simply slide into your existing track.

I had the same problem hoisting and droping with my mailsail even with batten cars. In the end I swapped the 10mm hallard out for a 8mm Dyneema one - what a difference. My laminated sail is a lot heavier than the standard, but I can raise it up 3/4 the way up now before the resorting to the winch.

Anyone know where I can buy Rutgerson 1525-11 sail slides (four wheels) in the UK?

Thanks

Hi D0bbies,

Try these guys, it's where we purchased ours.

http://www.contender.co.uk/Products/Rutgerson.aspx

We have replaced the single slide on the headboard with two RU-1526-11 (Big Wheels),
the batten cars have been replaced with four RU-1531-11-05 (10mm stud with Big Wheels)
the batten receptacles on the sail have been replaced with RU-1580 (Batten size is 30mm)
all of the intermediate slides are unchanged.
Fitting was straight forward and we completed the work with the sail still on the boat.

We also changed the mail halyard to 8mm Dyneema.

Cheers

Paul

Hi Nilandhoo

Thank you for your comprehensive reply.

Being single handed, hoisting and lowering the main is never an easy task but my main struggle is either reefing, or shaking them out with the sail under pressure. So it's a toss up whether to go for something like you've done or spend the extra and go for the likes of a "Tides Marine Track system".

"Grumpydatagit" said in an earlier post that just changing his main halyard to 8mm Dyneema made all the difference. Did you fit your new halyard before the slides and try it out?

Could you tell me why "two" RU-1526-11's on the headboard, and was it necessary to change the batten receptacles because the new RU-1531-11-05's weren't adaptable to the originals, or was it just more advantageous to do so?

Having invested in your "Rutgerson system, could let me know if has made life easier and therefore been worth the expense?

Cheers
Bob
