Hi does anyone have a good solution for smelly toilets? We are generally only on board at weekends and on arrival, I always have to take a very deep breath and pump the toilet vigorously for as long as my breath lasts. We have tried pumping the toilet dry then adding fresh water, which helps a bit but not much. I understand it is bacteria in the inlet pipe that causes the smell and once in normal use no problem.
I know it would be a waste of fresh water but seriously considering connecting the inlet pipe to the fresh water supply! Any ideas would be welcome All the best Paul |

Your warm inlet water will be a problem in Singapore. I have seen in the yachting mags a system for injecting some form of disinfectant into the inlet pipe by the sea water inlet seacock. If I can think of its name later I will let you know.

I have heard of a chlorine attachment which goes in the inlet pipe just after the seacock
I am sure if you google it you will find one Each pump releases some chlorine which kills the bacteria After the bowl the problem can be dealt with by flushing some pink portapotti fluid It helps to leave some in the bowl when you leave If you cannot flush the black water tank then put some fluid in such as Elson. There lots of makes if you cannot get any Elson |

Hi,
Nothing of above helps if you already have the bacteria. You have to replace both head hoses! In hot climates we change them annually unless you use fresh water to flush the head. After changing the hoses you can try to keep the hoses healthy by flushing the head with vinegar when you return from your weekend vacation. It might work. |

I had the same problem even in northern Europe during very warm periods in the summer.
The following can be done: 1. Do not close the toilet fresh water valve when you leave the boat for a longer period. If closed the bacteria in the water pipe grow much faster. If open there is some kind of water exchange possible. 2. The following proposal is based on the fact that copper is toxic. Therefore e.g. it is used in most of the antifouling paints. .............. I took a thick electrical wire of 80 cm + length. Took away parts of the rubber isolation but left sufficient rubber isolation to keep the stability of the cable. Then I put this cable into the plastic pipe feeding the manual toilet pump with fresh sea water. It took a while before especially the copper poisened mots of the bacteria but both measures resulted in a very reduced smel level when using the toilet flush after a while of absence. In addition you can look for a filter system put into the toilets fresh water pipe. I once found it in the internet. If I remember it correct it worked with acivated carbon. Regards |
