Here on the "other" side of the pond, we have a Holiday (Memorial Day) where we remember all the fallen War Heros. This day is usually also marked by our transistion from winter sports to summer sports. All our pools open, parks, etc. It is probably one of the most active days at our marinas also. This past weekend was no exception. Everyone was at their boat. The temperature was a record setting 98 F degrees. My crew and I set out for a short shakedown. Little did I know that (from my previous thread about why god made birds) a bird had a planted a bail of hay inside my boom. After spending a number of very HOT minutes rocking and cleaning the boom, I had 4 eggs, half a bail of hay on the deck, washed poop, and several heat weary passangers. When I got back to the dock, I found my port neighbor working on his engine that wouldn't start (sidetracked from his anchor windless that wouldn't work). My starboard neighbor (boat missing) came by with a heat weary look. His engine quit on return from across the bay. My rear neighbor couldn't get his dingy engine working. I saw many other heat weary boaters putting up sails, installing radars, etc. I'm not sure I saw anyone who looked like they were having a great spring experience. So this is what we collectively call the "Boating Experience". Hmmm.. maybe I was better off when my boss called me in to work on Sunday. I got paid time in a half for holiday pay, meal provided, air conditioning in a comfortable office. Gotta think about this one....

Mike, the reason I go out sailing the day after the ice is gone in the spring is that I can fill my "reservoirs" to avoid the first weekend when the weather is brilliant and everybody has got their boat in the water and they take the first shaky steps of the season.
My boat is in the centre of Stockholm so most boats will be power boats. If the petrol fumes from their engines don't choke me the waves will make me seasick. We actually have an expression for when all the power boaters are out driving at random in all directions, "bängsäckskavalkad" which means "nut case carnaval". The good thing is that one cloud in the sky will reduce the number of boats by fifty percent, and on an overcast day you will see none of them. Johan |
