Hi,

returning from aaland Islands to Germany we find our Jefa Steering (double Wheel singel rudder) wires to be close to collapse. Are there any experiences dealing with this subjekt?

You can order a new set from Jefa ready made.
Very easy to change.

But it might be worth looking into why it's breaking.

Finaly we found all 4 wires in our 2 wheels 1 rudder System close to collaps. We suggest that owners of this system should have a very close look to the System.

Thanks Carsten.
I have the same twin wheel, single rudder system on my 375. Mine is a late 2010, launched 2011 model. I have recently checked my steering before a trip to Lord Howe Island and it is in perfect condition. I would like to know if you find the cause so that I can ensure I don't suffer the same problems

Hi,

we guess the cause must have been a problem based on the material of the wires. We found all 4 wires in the same pour condition almost simultaniously. The Yard found it very unusual as well. We acted towards Hanse but have not yet recieved an anser. Since it is deep winter here in Germany we lost it a bit, but like to know what they say as well. However, if the story continues I will post it.
It is good to know that the System can work properly. Wish you a plesent trip to that wonderful Island.

Vyv Cox, who is a materials guy who writes for the UK magazine Yachting Monthly, did an article in the Nov 2016 edition, investigating the failures of the steering wires on a 2011 Hanse 400.  He concluded that the problem was that 7*7 wire had been used, which is not as flexible as the 7*19 wire which Jefa would recommend, given the size of the pulley wheels used in the system.    At the time he wrote the article, he was not aware of any other Hanses having a problem.  The inference was that somebody other than Jefa had made up the wires and they had used the wrong wire.

Given some of the comments above, the conclusion would seem to be to check the wires and if they are 7*19 (ie 7 strand with 19 wires in each strand) then you are probably ok, but if they are 7*7 then you really need to check for wire breakage around the pulley areas to see if they need replacing.   As each wire breaks, then the load on the other wire increases and thus they will suffer fatigue damage even faster.

We can only guess whether this was a quality issue, or whether somebody was trying to save costs in a rather critical area.

Dear Martin&Rene, Thank you for your reply. Very interesting. This is what it looked like. As already said the ather wires looked exactly alike, but the damage is now hidden behind the roll.
