I posted some time ago how I installed an inner forestay on my 505.  (Note:  I had the advantage of a bulkhead right where I wanted to install the double pad-eye).  I was trained as a mechanical engineer (although it has been a long time since I did any work in the field) but I did do load calculations and concluded that the deck alone was not going to support an inner-stay (as it is too flexible).  I suggest there are two considerations.  It is, I believe, critical that the vertical-component of the load be carried down to the hull. While it is possible that this can be done with a line (from the bottom of the pad-eye to the keel), I don't think that this alone is a great idea.  I believe this because I believe it is also important that the moment created by the total-load (in my case created by the bracket that supported the pad-eye) not be carried by the deck alone.  This "twisting" will cause deformation, potential leaks, and a potential failure.  I used 10,000# SS wire for the forestay; even a fraction of that load is a lot to be carried by the deck.  A storm sail takes a lot of load under static wind conditions; when hit by a wave or big gust it is hard to estimate the total forces.  I wanted to be certain that the first point of failure to be the sail, not the deck.

just as an Idea for a Hanse 400/370: Why not take the cleats with dyneema 10 mm available now triangular?

Hi All

Well the job is finally finished. The final result used a rod that in effect extends the stay through to the foremost bulkhead.

i built the arch on a 320 this month for the same purpose.  i'm going to plan the correct fittings on the mast and their correct height of attachments based on the need o not of a running rigging. ciao

the 320 hasn't a adequate bulckhead after the anchor locker, so i had to build an arch, i built it a bit further back of the anchor locker to have the center of effort more astern, to use also the staysail alone. i built it rigid to bring the load on the bulwarks. i plan to attach the innerstay soon after the upper spreaders, that being swept back at around 21° , will make the intermediate sidestays working as runners, and the addition a dyneema line simply fixed above the upper spreaders and to the stern cleat will suffice for any monster load.
being always solo sailing and for long trips, i plan to use a furler to do the most of the operations always from the cockpit.
