I would also contact directly Jesper Bank. This is nothing you would expect from a quality sail. They should get in touch with their cloth supplier.

I contacted the Elvstrom agent in Greifswald near the Hanse factory but they never responded. My sail is out of warranty so I'm not sure they would do anything.

Have you approached Elvstrom directly with this issue? When I had an issue with my furlstrom I wrote to the Danish MD and they couldn't have been more helpful in solving the problem, at considerable expense to them. Maybe worth a try?

It's  humiliating the way Hanse threats his customers.it's a selling strategy and non existing after sales policy. the just don't care.
Even when you send them a letter they never answer.
My brother who recently bought a X612 , build in 1996 had a lot of technical questions. He send an email straight to the wharf and they answer all his questions. They keep  contact with him on a regular base to inform him.
They say " every X yacht owner is highly important for us".
Are Hanse 415 is bought in marche 2015, based in Belgium), we sold are Hanse540e (based in de Med) last january  en we thought to bay the new 588.
We are now exploring other options in the range 56 and 60ft
reason : for us is after service sales very important and it is almost not excisting => Hanse

I now have an update on the condition of my FCL headsail. In Lavrion, Greece there is a large sailmaking business called Karantzi Sails. They have the largest sail loft in Greece (2000 sq metres) & make about 500 sails per year. One of the two brothers who run the business Nikos came to the boat shortly after berthing to assess the condition of my sail.

He has a Hanse 400 of his own & has seen many of the charter Hanse yachts with FCL sails in similar condition. The reason for the slits is down to delamination of the fabric & sewing patches is not a solution as more tears will appear from the stitching holes. The tear in the leech & foot at the clew are not repairable. His conclusion is that the sail is a write-off & not worth repairing & will not withstand a rigorous Meltemi blow.

These sails are made in SE Asia & contrary to my understanding are not of high quality. Being a laminated sail they hold their shape very well but are essentially a cheap racing sail. He thinks Hanse's marketing of these sails is less than honest.

With a minimum of 750 miles cruising before we return to Sicily I am faced with no alternative but to have a new sail made here before we leave. I had suspected that this problem was material failure although I would have expected delamination to have a different appearance. It seems that the effect I have experienced in my 4 year old sail is what happens to FCL.

He confirmed that is has not happened because I've abused the jib.

The slits are confined to two panels in the leech half of the sail 4 panels up from the foot.

The slits are about 5/6 cms long & go through all the layers. There is also one small hole. As far as I recall there is no relationship to the foil sections but I'll check that when we next unroll the sail. I'll try to get a photo posted. For sure it's the Nigel Effect.
