Victron charger repaired, so we got the batteries back. Then the Volvo guys decided the control panel had gone US, no idea how that happened, Isolated the battery, maybe should have left it on to keep power on the panel, amywaY new panel and new tacho arrive on Wednesday. We can run the engine without the tacho and without alarms, and without the engine room blower, lucky it's not too hot. Anyway we shoUld be all working bybthursday night when the new panel arrives.

Still not sure what happened, but.vthere were several chargers blown on this pontoon, so I guess it came down the power lead.

Is it possible to fit some kind of surge protector to guard against mains spikes. Next winter we may leave the boat in the water but perhaps it might br better to leave a solar panel connected to keep the main batteries topped up rather than mains power. However the solar is not connected to the engine battery. Any thought She?

Our engine battery was fine after 5 months being isolated. Inthink surge protection should be possible, but you would need an earth, presumabky the only one we can get at is the one in the same feed as the power.

How long can the batteries survive without power ?

I disconnected all topped up AGM batteries ( 90 Ah Starter, 2 x 165 Ah Ah Service, 90 Ah Thruster ) on Oct 25th 2015 completely by removing the negative ground ( no more LED on the Sterling VSRA )
We had a relatively mild winter.

On 25th April 2016 we reconnected all 4 batteries and measured voltages between 12.9 and 13.1 Volt.
Imho no need for a solar panel, when you have AGM's. Mine are now 3 years old.

I also disconnect my 4*165 AGM house batt when I leave the the boat for an extended periode. After 3-4 months there is hardly any lose in the voltage. We learned this the hard way, having keept the house bank connected while away resulting in batteries beeing "destroyed".

Make sure you disconnect the minus side, plus side disconnection could be dangerous.

An alternative is to stay connected to shore power. We did not like the idea of us beeing away foran extended periode while connected to shore power.

Cheers

back to the main topic, cruising in Turkey.  After repairing the boat, we have set off from Marmaris under blue skies, although have encountered some strong winds.  For those woried about Turkey, we have to say that nothing has happened to indicate that there is any change to the environment, other than the lack of bookings by the charter fleets, who tell us that they are 80% down on the same time last year.  This leaves the live aboard community free access to all the lovely spots.  Maybe there will be a rush of last minute bookings later, but so far we have seen very few yachts cruising, only 3 last night, and we are alone so far today.

Passage so far,

Marmaris to Bozukale, 28 NM anchored alone in the bay

Bozukale to Sogut, tied up to the town pier, lovely spot, 6 yatchts most charterer boats 16 NM

Sogut to Datca, 3 yachts, 2 private, one chartered by a lovely German couple who had been chartering for 35 years!!  22 NM

Datca to Mesudye, one local Lagoon left as we arrived, on our own now.  10 NM

Photos of Sogut will follow

I would like to add a story sad story

On our passage from Datca today we were approached by a coast guard vessel who called us on CH16.  After switching to CH 8 they informed us that they were searching for a missing person and asked if we had seen anything.  We hadn't but agreed to keep additional watch.  The sea was calm.  The Coast guard had the vessel and a helicopter in the sky.  THey did not say if they were searching for a local or a migrant.  We kept watch for the rest of our trip, visiting various floating objects until we say one that looked unlike flotsam.   On investigation it turned out to be a life jacket and a cheap set of waterproofs in a plastic bag.  We recovered the life jacket and jacket, but the trousers sank.  There was no identification on either, so we have no idea if they were related to the incident that the coast guard were investigating.  Nonetheless we tried to contact the coast guard on CH 16 to report the find, but they were our of VHF range.  When we anchored with Wifi we were able to learn the number of coast guard control and rang them.  Despite difficult English we managed to phonetically spell our boat name and pass on the information as best we could.  We were told that a body had been found.  10 minutes later another Coast guard member called us with better English, I took it to be the same chap that had contacted me earlier from the vessel, but I might be making it up.  He asked for the information again and the location of the pick up.  He thanked us for the location and facts, but told us that they had been searching for a local fisherman and that he had been found dead.

We felt that we had done the right thing, and Cathie did not feel good as we approached the unknown object in the water.  However, we have seen the Turkish Coast Guard in action from water and air, in complex search patterns, and we are reassured that so long as they know that one is in trouble, its nice to know that they are there.

We have no idea whether the things we recovered are from the local or from a migrant.  the Life jacket had no batteries in the strobe, and the whistle was not attached to the jacket.  If this is what the migrants are buying, then someone is even more cruel than I previously imagined.
