I have a yard fitted Simrad HS 35 with the handheld. For the latter I have mounted cradle at the wheel column.
I don't want to miss this setup, you get all the info from the boat nearby and powerful commsdirectly from the wheel. For dinghy trips I Keep a cheapo handheld ( West Marine ) which does the Job in marinas and communication tender/boat.
 
Negative points are:
a) Limited battery power for the handheld, I get about +/- 8 - 10 hours before recharging is necessary
b) clear accoustic feedback when you try to use the handheld in parallel.
