It's actually a Y cable with 1 Volvo (square) female plug (into the black box), 1 Volvo male plug to take the original female plug and one NMEA2000 plug.

Sourcing the square (6 pin?) Volvo black box plug may be a problem.

Roger you can usually track down the connectors with an image search like 'automotive wiring loom connectors'.  That said I'd like a quick x-Ray of the little black box to be sure what's in there!  Suspect the less techie money-saving approach is to pickup the Volvo box on a US trip :-)

Variety of mentions elsewhere that fuel flow rate and oil pressure don't always show up successfully on the interface but Eng hours, temp, voltage, turbo pressure (if applicable) and alarms seem to. Fuel flow and oil pressure info may be down to what sensors the particular engine has fitted.  Must admit that even on a sail boat I'd like the temp, fuel flow rate and oil pressure easily available.

After a great deal of forum surfing, searching, emails to one of the Sicilian VP dealers and some assistance from Windcraft Australia I think I have a rough handle on the availability of data from the D1 -D3 engines.

Option 1 - EVC Trip Computer Software Update – Cost E550 + tech time to visit vessel and carry out update – Estimated at E150. The TCS will provide the following on the EVC screen.

Instant fuel rate

Trip time

Trip fuel

Average fuel rate

Time to empty

Instant fuel economy (Note 1)

Trip distance (Note 1)

Average fuel economy (Note 1)

Distance to empty (Note 1)

Note 1 – Only on D3 or larger D series engines.

Option 2 - NMEA 2000 Interface – Cost E475 + cabling extension to B&G network estimated at E100. The Interface can provide the following to a suitable Plotter MFD.

• Engine RPM

• Engine hours

• Coolant temperature

• Battery voltage

• Turbo pressure

• Oil pressure

• Warnings and alarms

• Depth*

• Surface water temperature*

• Speed through water*

• Water tank level*

• Fuel tank level*

• Rudder position*

* Requires extra sensor

So if you want fuel consumption data you need the EVC Trip Computer Update but this data will only appear of the EVC screen ie the 2.5 inch, 4 inch or 7 inch screens.

If you want engine data displayed on you chart plotter you need the NMEA 2000 Interface. The actual data displayed will apparently depend on the particular chart plotter.

Obviously if you want both types of data then you apparently need both the Trip Computer Update and the NMEA 2000 Interface and possibly a new mortgage on the house.

For my money I think we will go for the EVC Trip Computer Update which will hopefully enable us to save some fuel. The NMEA 2000 Interface only enables the duplication of the data already available on the EVC screen so for us not worth the additional money.

Wow - my £200 estimate was a bit on the low side then.

I suspect most boats would benefit from Option 2 as most are fitted with the 'simple' warning-lights-only display, rather than the more expensive EVC display.

Just an update-

We had the EVC Trip Computer Software update installed on our D3 Volvo Penta and tested the Fuel Usage functions a few days ago. The figures were similar to those I had worked out using the fuel consumption data available on some website but the fuel burn rate was a bit higher than expected. But the liters per nautical mile figures were similar. The other figure it gives is Total Fuel Used per trip (or period the engine is running). It was interesting to see our sea trial consumed just 2.5 liters of fuel over the approximate 25 minutes with rev ranges from 700 to 2,000 rpm.

The total cost of the update was however a bit higher being Euro 825 including travel time, labour and VAT.

Maybe a cost effective option is the Engine Gateway YDEG-04 from Yacht Devices (www.yachtd.com) @ US$189.

I think this will still need a micro-c to simnet converter cable in addition.

I have confirmed this is suitable for D1 and D2 Volvo pentas.

Anyone achieved to have fuel flow data displayed from a D2 engine? Either on ECP or B&G Zeus?
I only get RPM, temp, hours, but no fuel flow.

Before i buy the ECP would like to be sure it will give me fuel flow

I am getting the data you list from the Yacht Devices Engine Gateway YDEG-04 but no fuel flow.

I had this fitted on my 505 #123 with a Volvo D2-75 engine and the B&G Zeus2 set up.
It shows RPMs, coolant temperature and house battery voltage right on the plotter, but nothing on oil pressure, which I understand is not yet possible given state of the VP software. Nice set of display options, both digital and analog-like available. Useful when motoring.
