10mm mainsail halyard with a dyneema core?

   Hello fellow Hanse sailors 
We have recently purchased a new mainsail for our Hanse 370 and are looking at also replacing the halyard (which is currently 12mm polyester) with one that has a dyneema core to reduce the stretch in the rope and get as much performance out of the sails as possible. The boat is used for family cruising and is not raced so maximum performance is not required.

I have been looking at getting the thinner 10mm LIROS Dynamic Plus Dyneema (SK78) to have less friction in the rope and for easier storage. LIROS suggest this has a breakload of at least 3100Kg. However, they recommend a maximum sail area of 30sqm. Our main is 40sqm.

My questions is, will the 10mm SK78 be sufficient, or is there another alternative for reducing the thickness of the halyard from 12mm to 10mm without going for the more expensive SK99 dyneema?

I note that the 12mm polyester LIROS Herkules has a minimum breakload of 3,500Kg and is recommended for a 40sqm sail area.

	Ben, Our 575 came from the factory with a 12mm Liros Regatta 2000 main sail (90sm) halyard which according the the Liros website has a breaking strain of 7200. I would think the 10mm Regatta with a breaking strain of 5000 would be more than suitable for your main sail halyard. What was the breaking stain of your original halyard?

	I have used the 10 mm Liros for several years on my 370. Works perfectly. Both for racing and leasure.

	Thanks Wayne I’m afraid I don’t remember what the breaking strain is of the existing halyard. It’s 12mm polyester and we have been using it for over 10 years (there is a lot of stretch in it).

	Hi SamsonII Is your Liros halyard, Regatta 2000 or Dynamic Plus?

	Just be aware that your clutch may not hold the 10mm line as well. I replaced my polyester halyard with a thinner and much more expensive dyneema line and am now spending more money to upgrade clutches to ceramic parts to hold the new line. Another solution is to insert some thin lashing line into the core in the area of the clutch to fatten the line and I may end up doing this too. The advantage of low-stretch line is lost if the clutch “gives up” a lot of line before holding.

	Hi I use SVB Glestein Cruise XP with dyneema core for our Hanse 370 for years without any problems. https://www.svb24.dk/da/gleistein-cruise-xp-the-all-rounder-rope.html 10 mm has 3800kg breaking loads and 12 mm is about 5100kg. 10 mm is 4.73 euro/meter and 12 mm is 6.83€ Reefs are 8 mm Mainsheet 12 mm Jib sheet 10 mm All halyard are 10 mm. This tabel is from my wifes and my Danish Yacht Master 3rd degrees report: My jib halyard slips a little in the Spinlock XTS. Edited by H8jer - 21 May 2023 at 08:30
