I suppose there is someone who have experience with winches for genua. My boat is delivered with only 4 Lewmar 46ST and consider to add 2 more.
What size should be ordered to handle a genuasheet properly? Is Lewmar 46 ST enough, or should I increase to 50 or 52?

Hi,
We argued about this point long and finally we ended up keeping the original configuration.
I think it all depends on how you are going to use the boat. We are club racing and fast cruising and we don't miss the 3rd pair of winches.
Upwind we use the primaries (both electric) for the main sheet and one of the secondaries (also both electric) for the jib sheet. The winches have more than enough power for the job.
Downwind we keep the same configuration as above but during jibes we drop the gennaker.
If U want to race with a symmetric spinnaker then for sure U need an extra pair of winches, but positioning them is a problem. Edited by panos - 19 November 2008 at 15:54 |

I think the question of size may be answered differently if they are the more typical non-electric style that most of us have. On my 400, the 46 is just workable for the small non overlapping racing jib that I use. However, I'm now contemplating an overlapping sail for lighter winds and will definitely install bigger winches in that case. I haven't decided yet if I will use the Lewmar 50 or 54.
Something else to consider is how often one is "grinding in" the sail. If the type of racing you do is longer distance with a half hour between tacks, the crew might be fine with a 46. However, if you're short tacking every couple of minutes up a shore line, you may have a mutiny on your hands.

Thanks for your views. I like the solution to have control off mainsailsheet from steering position on the port aft winch espesialy when sailing shorthanded. If I bring another winch in between I don't think this will be possible with todays setup. No decision is taken so far...

Steve, throw your old 46's in my direction when you upgrade, will you?
Another reason for bigger winches is that they constantly take the varying change of load from the sheets (if you don't have the sheet on the coachroof and make sure to close the clutch every time you make a change). I have lead my jib sheet to one of the genua winches where there is no way to fasten the sheet other on the winch itself. That winch is the first to cry for maintenance. Johan |

I'll take it under consideration Johan but originally I had the 46s moved forward to trim the racing jib and the plan would be to move them back towards the helm again and use them for the main trim.

Hi guys,
This is interesting. On our 470 we got feed up with the location of the secondaries, so we had them moved fwd and the difference is amazing, so much more user friendly, actually work as good back rest at anchor too!
but having used them for some time now and with a larger head sail, I'm starting to wonder if they should be larger, 50's or 54's. Is there a resource that talks about the ideal loads on winches and or the load limits??
Cheers
B

Johan, yes I knew that. Just couldn't think of a good quip back at ya :) Brad - I thought I saw something on the Harken or Lewmar sites. If I come across it again I'll forward to you. Steve |
