We've now had our 320 for 2 yrs and it got me thinking what's worked and what's not so here goes.

What we wanted
There are only two of us so when we considered buying a Hanse we wanted a boat that would be set up for short handed sailing and would be suited for using at weekends and for our 2 week summer holidays. We aren't interested in racing but wanted her to be fairly quick to get from a to b when needed.  So far our sailing areas are around the Clyde area. As the Clyde area is a pretty safe area we decided to hold off buying all the electronic gubbins that you read about. There just didn't seem the need to go to what was a huge additional expense. We also had to take into account that the boat was to be kept on a swing mooring. Taking all this into account the boat was kitted out with what we saw as the essential items. These included the VHF with cockpit hand set, IS20 wind & depth / speed log, windlass with additional battery, fridge, bathing platform, additional winches & wind generator. The boat has wheel steering & I also have a hand GPS. In addition we bought a new Honda dinghy with the aluminium floor and the air cooled 2.3hp Honda outboard.

What's worked.
Electric windlass is a must as we now do lot's of anchoring. Wind generator for the swing mooring, bathing platform for dinghy access at anchor or on the swing mooring. It's much safer having it when loading the engine onto the dinghy. The Honda Dinghy & air cooled engine have been brilliant. We now see the cockpit VHF hand set as an essential safety item for shorthanded sailing. Last season we didn't like the self tacker in light winds but this season we seemed to have got the knack of it in all but the very lightest winds. As we have an additional battery we have never had any power issues running a fridge etc on holidays. We like the windows on the side of the hull and can't understand why they have been removed from the 2010 models.

Issues.
Some minor but niggling issues.
At 1st the IS20 depth / speed log caused a lot of grief. After Hanse / simrad changed the head / monitor several times eventially they finally agreed to change the cable and hey presto it's worked ever since. Rattling access doors to the engine. Squeaking floor boards. minor gel coat problems up by the stem. We have not had the leaking windows yet! Cockpit shower head burst in the winter.
This season we also kept the boat in the water over winter for the 1st time and had hoped that she would last the season without taking her out but on holiday we were only getting 4 knts under engine. She was really struggling so we had her lifted out in Portavadie and the state of her bottom was astounding. After only about 13 mths in the water the barnacles were about 2cm long and there were muscles growing around the prop! The only good thing was that the anode was still in good condition after 2 years.

Improvements
After 2 years we are now finding her to be a cracking small boat ideally suited for what we want and great for 2 people when set up right. We have decided that the boat probably could do with a traveller particularly as we sail shorthanded. We also feel that some kind of davits would help as we are find that having to tow "Fido" around every where can be a bit of a pain.  We are also toying with the idea of a 105% genoa but after finally cracking the self tacker / mainsail arrangement we aren't sure about it being worth it.

Holly Father!! You can use your yacht to supply seafood to a local sushi-bar ... then you get the money for all those neat improvements...LOL

Is that how the original untifouling by Hanse works??? Sweet...

Thanks for sharing...

What windlass-anchor-chain combination do you have??? What wind generator did you install...the batteries??? Any pictures???

The anti-fouling is the international paints cruiser type applied by Hanse. We can't understand how the barnicles grew so fast but I remember someone did suggest that it should actually last up to two years!!!LOL
It's the lewmar windlass with additional battery that is installed next to the existing batteries on the Port side. It's a danforth anchor with 8mm galvanised chain. The genny is a Rutland 913 wind generator.
Everything was fitted by Hanse or their sub-contractors.

That's a nice list of pluses and minuses!
I am particularly interested in what you mean by finding the right method of working with the self-tacker. Being a novice owner, I am not sure about how to handle this, both in light winds as in stronger winds. Locating the sheet to the right hole also puzzles me.
I hope you can provide some handy tips.

Best regards,

Thanks for the info Drumduff...
what particular model of Lewmar the Pro 1000 or the Pro-fish 1000...I will order one of these in 2-3 days...
have you noticed any natural heeling of the boat to port??

Still i can't believe the bottom can be fouled so severely after just 1 year on the water...Was that an International's Micron antifouling???

For how long have your boat laying still in the water?
Have never seen that before in my life.

Hi, We got the boat in July 08 where she lived on a swing mooring until being lifted out Sept 08. She was clean as a whistle when lifted out but antifouling was touched up before going back in water April 09. She stayed at her mooring until Oct 09 then she was kept alonside a marina pontoon until April 2010. She was then moved to our own swing mooring where she is now kept. She was lifted on our holidays in June for cleaning. The growth of barnacles has occurred between April 09 & June 10. Even the marina guys said that they had never seen so much growth in such a short space of time. They did a great job getting her clean again in the short time scale they had. The lifting out at Portavadie was a bit different as they used a folding portable lifting hoist that drives down the slip and picks the boat out of the water. The problem being is that it's tidal giving only an hour either side of high tide. This meant they only had 2 hours to get her out, clean her and get her back in.
Since cleaning the boat now feels like it goes like a rocket now!!!LOL

Drumduff, how is your experience with the 913 Rutland windgen??? I've checked the catalogue - looks like a pretty mighty thing with blades more than 900 mm in diameter...what is the total battery bank capacity on your boat??? Do you have any pictures of the 913 installed???

Thanks in advance

Hi. We've had the wind genny since the boat was new. As the boat sits on a swing mooring I've always thought it was an essential item. There is the starting battery & two leisure batteries fitted. The 2nd battery is part of the windlass set up. I think that this is essential by the way if you're fitting a windlass even if you do need to run the engine during anchoring. Can't say how good the genny is other than that in 2 years we have never had any battery problems and have been away from the boat for weeks at a time sometimes. It sits on a tall pole at the stern of the boat out of harms way. I'm away from the boat for a couple of weeks so will get a photo when next on.
