The race starts in Vancouver BC's English bay and rounds Passage Island about 6 miles away. Participants can choose to round the island in either direction.
I entered the race in Tangleberry, my 2001 Hanse 371. It was blowing about 20 knots at the start. I had put the 149% genoa on the furler as the forecast seemed to indicate 15 knots or so. There wasn't time to change sails so I reefed the main before the start. The Tiddly Cove Yacht Club allocates divisions in an odd manner. Anyway with my no-spinnaker PHRF rating of 140 I was in division 2, although division 1 had several slower rated boats. Division 2 started 5 minutes ahead of division 1. We had a reasonable start, third across the line on starboard tack. I got ahead of those two boats quite quickly then tacked in front of them. Leading the race, I took one long tack out of English bay to Point Atkinson. Boat speed was 7 to 7.2 knots. Two Division 1 boats, a J-111 and a J-109 passed me on the upwind leg. I went Counter-Clockwise around Passage Island, all the other boats went clockwise. Winds were lighter in the lee of the island and I shook out the reef. I never dropped below 4 knots and soon got back into the wind, reaching at 8+ knots. To my surprise when other boats came into view around the island Tangleberry was ahead of all of them including the two Js. They both passed us again on the downwind leg. The J-111 had AIS so I could check his speed. It showed 11.1 knots under Asymm. The 109 was little slower. I finished third boat for boat, ahead of all the other division 1 boats and all the boats in my division. So I won a bottle of rum for First in Division 2. Looking at the corrected times Tangleberry would also have won Division 1. ![]() Results at: |

Thanks Guys,
This was my first race since buying Tangleberry back in September '17. This is an older photo, but shows what we look like racing. The hard dodger, anchor on the bow and fenders on the pulpit fool competitors into thinking we are slow... ![]() Edited by gshannon - 06 May 2018 at 19:51 |

Nice job and great narrative. I've found that in areas that have few Hanses (like the Great Lakes) Hanses surprise a lot of people. Keep up the good work.

Entered another single handed race this coming Saturday and Sunday. 25 boats in 4 divisions. Tangleberry is in division 2. Two 40 foot Beneteaus are the main competition. Both rate a little faster. It is 2 races Vancouver to Nanaimo ond day 1 and back on day 2. Probably a beat out and a spinnaker reach back. Wish me luck. Will post results afterward.
