Hi !
I have now started planning the trip home with my new 430. Does anyone have any data about average speed motoring, and average diesel consumption ? I have the 55HP engine and 3 blade folding propeller. Sveino Edited by sveino - 10 November 2007 at 09:17 |

Hi Sveino,
We clocked some 280 hours and 2600 NM with Uhambo since August. We have a 55hp engine with the Flex O fold 3blades. I will get my numbers on the boat (probably tomorrow) and I will come back to you. Cheers What is your trip home? |

Hi
Alain & Anne.
That would be great, Thanks. I will sail from Stavanger to Finnsnes along the norwegian coast. I hope the boat is ready in Stavanger in about 2 weeks, and plan to start as soon as possible. I expect a cold and dark trip, so will sail/motor as quickly as possible. It should be possible to do it in about 6 days, if I sail day and night, but there are some difficult areas around "Stadt" and "Hustadvika" I would prefer not to do at night. Time will show... Best regards Svein Olav |

Congratulation with a new 430, a great boat.
If you go with 2000 -2500 rpm the boat will do about 6.8- 7.5 nm/hour.
The engine will use from about 0,6l- 0,75l/nm.
Beware, the dieseltank may not take what is written on it.
From Stadt you will have the stream with you, about 1nm/h.
The Norwegian coast is very beautiful, even in the winter.
May your luff never stay slack.
S.L.

Hi Svein
Got the numbers! Me clocked 231.8hours and used 685 l. Average conso 3l/h engine speed 2150rpm giving 6.5 knt. In fact this an average conso including low speed sailing electricity generating. Our cruising speed was around 2150 rpm |

Remember
that variety is the spice of life for a diesel engine, too. It is recommended not
to run the engine with constant rpm too long periods. On the contrary, max rpm time
to time is good for the engine.

Hum Hum!!
What about diesel generating plant or genset which are running at constant speed in order to keep the frequency at a guaranteed value!! And constant speed does not necessary mean constant load! That's why the question of propeller size is so important in term of engine guarantee. |

Hi 2A,
Here is an
answer for your question, a copypaste from Wikipedia:
"Medium-speed
engines
Large
electrical generators are often driven by medium speed engines, (approximately
300 to 1200 rpm) which are optimised to run at a set (synchronous) speed
depending on the generation frequency (50 or 60 Hz) and provide a rapid
response to load changes."
Notice that
yacht motors classify to “High-speed engines”.
I admit
that I am not a professional engine expert; maybe someone else could inform us
more.
Anyway, that’s the reason why I have tried to find out some basic facts
about engines. A couple of years ago I discussed with a Yanmar dealer,
and he suggested not using only a certain rpm for too long periods,
because it has some kind of negative effect to the engine. (Honestly, I
don’t remember
the mechanism, but it was believable.) What is “too long time”, maybe some hours?
Another advice was that the engine needs periodically high revs, too. Maybe
once a month, when the engine is warm, some minutes with max revs would do the
job?
I think
that it is natural and typical to use quite low revs in order to avoid noise
and fuel consumption – those unfamiliar things for sailors. Unfortunately, this
kind of habit may be harmful for the engine in the long run.
As I mentioned,
I am not a professional. Therefore I, too, would like to know more about how to
use the yacht engine correctly when it is used to replace the wind.

I delivered several 430 with 55hp. with Gori propeller at 2200 rpm you get 7.5knots confortably and consumption is about 3ltr/hr

Hi Shawn,
i know this is the 430 thread but i also know you have sailed many hanses, so what would the equivalent be on your 470?
