My 508 has a pronounced and aggressive pull to starboard when motoring. If I let go of the helm for a second the boat begins to turn and the rate of turn accelerates dramatically.

any thoughts are appreciated
be well

Jack,

Is this problem new or has the boat always done this?

Presume something is out of alignment ... hull, keel, rudder, propeller, saildrive, or steering transmission.

If only under motor then you should look at prop or saildrive first.  If only just started then propeller seems most likely.  Could just be something stuck or not folding/feathering.

Can you dive and look?  Or send down a diver?   You could check steering cables etc too.

It seems that balanced rudders like ours don't self-center they way we learn to expect from cars and more traditional rudders. My boat doesn't self center, and can turn to greater and greater angles if no hand is on wheel. That said, I don't experience a strong pull to one side or the other when I am hand steering, I can keep it centered with finger.

One possible test is to get good speed up under power, then quickly put the engine into neutral. While coasting, does the pull go away? If so, I'd look at mis-aligned saildrive. If not, I'd confirm prop is feathering, then start looking at rudder/keel alignment.

Goodluck!

The pull only occurs when under motor, not when in neutral or under sail...thanks for your thoughts

I think that is good news, means you can eliminate keel and rudder alignment problems. Those were the more terrible scenarios.
