we sail so little with the jib it’s difficult to say how much faster we go precisely. What I feel is that even with such a small increase in size the airflow across the back of the main improves and I’m pretty sure we get more drive of the main too. I can adjust the slot shape more underway with the cars to cope with differentbwind speeds, and we do adjust the leach line to make sure we have no leach wobble or leach hook which again improves the flow of air across the main.
On atack angles on a flat sea we point at about 31 degrees apparent with the 105. The leach is set about one third of the distance between the flag halyard block and the end of the spreader. If we are getting bounced around we usually go for more like 33. Mind you we have bridles on the mainsheet blocks too, and that improves our pointing.

Hello and thanks for your article, very interesting and clever solution
What are your Genoa dimensions? I need to get one tailored for my 385 and want to ensure it won't interfere with the mast cables Regards, Martin

hi Martin,
the biggest that fits as far as we know is a 105%. We have a DEN 6 from elvestrom and its infinitely better than the self tacker that is supplied with the boat, the tracks mean we can manage the shape and adding the adjustment from the cockpit means we can adjust more quickly and more frequently. We used the 105 when racing and put the self tacker back on when we were two up, but actually we prefer to sail with a 'proper sail' even when there are just the two of us. |

Hello Mark&Catherine, I have a practical question, did you fix the Genoa tracks yourself on the rooftop ? I would like to install these on our 385 & having the reinforcement plans in my hand not a problem but what with the bolts who go through the line cover upper part before touching the deck with reinforcements. Is it an open space ? do we need special bolts and spacers or is their no empty room in-between and can i tighten the bolts firmly and direct in the aluminum reinforcement ? thanks, Carlo
