hi everyone,
While at anchor last weekend. Our house batteries went completely flat. Our windlass worked fine when we arrived, in the morning the LEDís were not coming on. Trip is fine, power from the batteries, the relay on the back of the switch panel, is a 70amp switched relay. Got a new one, doesnít work. However, when I touch the two power wires together and do not connect the relay, windlass works. I can only assume the circuit board is fried, which concerns me on availability of one to replace it. I assume the relay is to ensure the engine is on to use the windlass. Os there a reason I couldnít skip the relay and wire the two wires together? I have photos but canít figure out how to post them.

Hi ChrisHanse400,
Have you tried a new wire at the relay between the switching contacts to activate the relay.

I found the wires connecting the relay to the switch on the bow locker were very corroded because Hanse used copper wire which was not tinned.  A test with temporary wire behind the panel confirmed that after I replaced the switch in bow locker.

Finally I purchased a wireless remote control, which connects to the main windlass relay (switching connectors), and all the problems were fixed. It cost about US$30 on Ebay, including 2 remotes.
