Hi Everyone

This is my first post. I’m a relatively new Hanse 342 owner in Melbourne, Australia. We have owned our boat “Gwendoline Mary” for about a year.

A few weeks ago I discovered that we had a broken steering stop (Lewmar wheel steering). One stop and a 1/4 of the ring had broken. It looked like this.

There are several other reports of this failure on 342s in this forum, but no solutions.

The ring (Lewmar part no 89000004) is obsolete.  The new Lewmar part is 89000006, but it’s a 6-8 week wait for manufacturing + shipping time to Australia. And it now has holes not slots, so you can’t set the rotation angle of the ring. The required angle varies depending on the length of the drag link to the rudder so if the holes are wrong your steering stops at different angles in different directions. Lewmar was not very exact with the information they provided, so rather than hoping it will fit, I made one instead.

My replacement is a hybrid between the original and the Jefa stop plate used on the Hanse 350.

It’s a 12mm stainless steel ring with 10 degree slots in it for some angular adjustment. The stops are 50mm Delrin (acetal) on 12mm bolts.  A workshop waterjet cut the ring for me in a couple of days.

Here is the new one.

I installed it today and seems to work.

It probably reduces steering travel a bit, maybe 15 degrees of wheel angle. But that is in comparison to a broken stop ring, so it might be about right.

Hopefully this is useful to the next person with broken steering stops.

Cheers

Thor
