hi . using the windlass with more than 50m of chain is a punishment on the H385.  the chain gets stuck when going up.  difficult to navigate solo.  has anyone changed the windlass?  modify the anchor locker?  thank you for your expertise
Best regards

hi, yes using 50m + of chain is a slow process, and requires constant prodding of the chain as it builds up below the windless when recovering.  Iím not sure what can be done as the chain locker is not really deep enough for more than 50m of chain.  Ironically the windless is quite slow for a Quick! But unless forced to change I donít think Iím going to bother as itís not an easy place to retrofit a different type.
Having said all this, with a little patience the gear works ok and not let us down, so I guess weíll carry on.
Interested to hear other comments.

Hi """following"""

I agree that this is a problem on the 385 especially when your sailing single handed. I thought about adding a remote control so the anchor can be dropped and recovered from the cockpit but this does not solve the problem of the chain stacking up. I was also thinking of adding some device/slid to take the chain a little further forward, but havent got round to it.

I am sure somewhere on here there are feeds regarding the chain locker but maybe for the larger Hanse's

Hi everybody,
I use a stainless steel chain. The problem of stacking is really reduced.

One of my best (and least expensive) upgrades has been to add a wireless remote to the windlass.  These can be found (search 4wd winch remote) on eBay for about $10.
Fitting is reasonably straightforward on the 385 as the wiring can be found via the access hatch on the anchor locker  recess in the forward cabin..
There is a picture of my install elsewhere on the forum.
Batteries lasted about 3 seasons on Ningaloo but anchoring every day in the Med (often more than once a day) got through them in three months.  Easy to replace however...
I realize this doesn't help with the chain buildup but it is a great help when single handed.

Hello Stuart,
I found the remote control unit on Ebay, but not your schedule for installation in this forum.
Can you give me a hint where to find it ?
Thanks in advance,
Frank

Here is a picture of the remote wired up to the windlass.
The remote requires power (positive and negative) and one connection each for up and down.  I was able to find the cable that connects to the plugin controller and hijack these connections.  The double skin of the anchor well ensures all the electrical connections stay dry.
