Hi all , am planning on updating my Simrad NX40 9” chartplotter at  the helm, can anyone recommend a suitable chartplotter that will fit and connect to the existing wiring. Was looking at B and G or Raymarine but any advice will be helpful .
Thanks

Either B&G Zeus3S or Vulcan will do the job.  The Vulcan is touch screen only however I didn't find this an issue and rarely use the physical controls on my Zeus.  You can't share charts on the Vulcan so if you are considering multiple MFD this may be a consideration.

Also be aware that B&G/Simrad are in the process of switching to a different processor and operating system and have just introduced the ZeusS model on the new platform.  At the moment this is positioned as a simple (uncluttered) device so it won't have all the features of the Zeus3S.  I don't see support for the Zeus3S ending immediately however I would not be surprised if it is replaced by newer (incompatible) models in the next couple of years.

They have recently introduced the Zeus S which is an upgrade to the Vulcan.

Thanks for your replies , will look into the B and G Zeus S. Do you know how easily the B and G connect to the existing Simrad instruments ?

I am not certain that the ZeusS is a replacement for the Vulcan.  It is built on a totally different processor and operating system platform. No doubt the existing Vulcan and Zeus models will be transitioned onto this platform over the coming years.

The new ZeusS has a very simplistic UX/UI which will make it easier for beginners and those who are overwhelmed by the complex menu structure of the current Vulcan/Zeus models.  However it will frustrate anyone who wants to make full use of their MFD.

Note that the new processor and associated OS is not compatible with the current range.

Very confusing marketing decision to use the ZeusS name given the current touchscreen range is Vulcan and the S suffix has already been used with Zeus.  A totally new name would have been better, but it's difficult to know exactly what their road-map is for transition to the new processor.

Thank you Stuart, you are definitively more technical than I am.
I was just reporting what one of the guys at the B&G stand in Dusseldorf told me.

You can use a simrad-to-Nmea2000 converter cable.

I'm just in the middle of the process to swap my NX40 to Vulcan 7 on my H355.
Whatever your choice wiil be you will have tu run new cables unless you put new NMEA 2000 plugs at each ends or provide suitable Simnet > NMEA 2000 adpaters (simplier although much more expansive way).  NMEA2000 is really easy to install and configure.  Just watch tutorials on YouTube
I also get this opportunity to swap IS20 devices for Triton2.  So I ran a complete NMEA 2000 Network.  Quite straightforward process although time consuming!  I just kept original Sminet network for GPS sensor (useless since VULCAN built in sensor is more accurate), ruder sensor, compass RC 40, autopilot computeur (AC12) & wireless remote control.  Just a bridge between both networks + moving network power supply and all is fine.
Please remember that removing NX 40 means that you loose the "transalator" betwwen NMEA 0183 & NMEA2000/Simnet.  If you need NMEA 0183 for a device such as VHF and/or AIS receiver you need to replace it.  May be 2 translator needed for AIS since AIS datas runs at high speed NMEA 1083 (33800 Bauds or so) but some AIS receivers need low speed NEMA0183 (4800 Bauds)
Last thing : both Vulcan & Zeus S (as well as Triton2) have smaller footprints.  you will need to arrange something to make them fit a bigger hole...

If you look at Vulcan & Zeus S side to side the main difference are a slightly faster processor, chart sharing capacites, better screen résolution and key controls.
Whatever the brand and whatever you do key controls will last max 10 years.  I have no experience with outdoor touchscreen but actually it cannot be so worse !
Better resolution & slightly faster processor do not worth extra cost (doubled from Vulcan)

Thanks for all your replies , as usual with boats nothing is as straightforward as you would hope . I was hoping I could just change the chartplotter and it the new one would fit in the existing hole and link into existing network with minimal alterations . I should have known better lol 😂
