What does everyone use for cockpit comfort? Our boat came with individual cushions bought off-the-shelf. It's not a very elegant solution. There is always the option of having custom cushions. Did anyone find an alternative? A less expensive solution?
If you went with custom cushions, any tips for types of cushions? What about fasteners? Some boats use snaps but a knowledgable friend says never penetrate the gelcoat with screws - find a alternate solution. Another friend just removed velcro saying it did not work and was unsightly. On the pattern for the cushions, did you get a two-piece set for the cockpit with the section by the companionway non-cushioned? Other patterns? Anything different for the helm seats? Thanks!

We are using the factory supplied dark grey cushions. I have not used the attached fasterners, just a small safety line for each cushion.

One thought, we have taken most of our cushions home. The ones that I purchased with the boat took up way to much room to store. I use the bottom cushions on the cockpit seats. When someone wants a back one, I grab an interior one from below. I also did not attach them to the gelcoat. Somehow drilling holes did not seem right

Hi, we also use the factory supplied cockpit cushions, we had some made up for the helm seats, 4 inch thick with gauze material to the underside to let them drain if they get wet.
We haven't ever found the need to fix the cockpit cushions, but the helm seat ones have plastic fasteners on cloth straps, with the bases fixed with outdoor grade 3M double sided tape. Seems to work well and no need for screws. I can't remember the name of the fasteners but can look next time I am on board. All the best Paul - Night Train

Hi, I remembered where we got the fasteners I was describing: http://www.surefas.com/#/product_perfix
As previously described they don't need to be screwed into the fibreglass, the 3M tape works well. All the best Paul - Night Train

When we outfitted our H370e in 2006 we had cockpit cushions made in dark blue to match the color of the saildrop. A mistake. The dark color got too hot and the cushions frequently slid off the seats. Later we discovered seats like the ComfortSeat referred to in the previous response. They are fantastic. There isn't a more comfortable seat available. Recommend them highly.

Thanks for all the comments. Comfort sets appear to be out of business. They look great though. West marine has some "knock offs" which I may consider. I'm also going to get a custom quote. Any other methods?

After several experiences on various yachtts and my own I have had custom cushions for the cockpit made. These are attached with press studs to press stud screws which are fitted through the teak panels. The end thread will penetrate the gelcoat but just use a little silicone on the ends or epoxy glue!
The reason for using these attachments are so the cushions stay in place when the yacht is constantly pitching and yawing. There are only 5 attachment points on each bench cushion. The next consideration is the use of the best aerated foam (American marine from for outdoor applications with a large cell structure) which is expensive but drains quickly. The cushion covers are made from sunbrella. As you probably know there are various grades of this fabric, but I have the standard marine version. The final consideration is what is comfortable for your bum over extended periods - the thickness of our foam is 100mm!
