As we are still in the position of pre-owning a Hanse 461 I'd like to ask whether you owner-guys are happy with the cockpit table? It's chic as everything else on the hanse but is it functional? Where do you put your drinking bottles, the sun glasses, the camera a.s.o.? Any suggestions? Does Hanse offer an alternative?

Hi Thomi, No it is not as functional as a dedicated full chart sized chart table such as we've experienced before on a Grand Soliel 42 - but equally when parked up that older dedicated full sized chart table took up a lot of space on the 42 footer and as you'll realise - a copy of it would do little to compliment the modern designer look of the 461 saloon. We accepted we'd live with any functional limitations when sailing (and in truth after ones first month one actually forgets how it was before) but we still enjoy the buzz when other cruising people come below and say "'WOW' what a comfortably set up interior - look just like an apartment." I don't think we'd get that if a big more functional chart table was built in. I've posted some pictures before on how our instrument panel is set up with the screens / radios / navtex / stereos etc all recessed into a leather faced panel which sits at an angle inside the big locker above the table. It means we can simply clip on the locker front when in port and all that nav gear dissappears also. We also had a lip added to the base of ALL lockers to help prevent gear sliding out from windward lockers opened when underway. That works! But this lip plus the space inset below that big instrument locker with both laid with non slip mat, give more than enough space for loose pencils / iPods / handhelds / glasses etc. We have not set up a spot to take the odd beer can - but that just means I have to scull it before I go below - or get back up top before it gets warm! One issue with a non 'fixed and dedicated' chart seat is that on our model (#7) our two seats are fixed to the floor when underway by a short flexible strop and stainless clip. The model #1 that I saw had those same seats held in place by dropping inot stainless rod 'channels'. The strops can't be too tight, or the clips can't be undone. This means our seats move oh so slightly in any big seaway. It's maybe not a big issue for you (and one I can / will sort out when I get the inclination and time) as I believe newer models are built back to the orignal 'stainless channel' specification. IMHO - you'll get less movement underway with those. Anyway - its good to hear you are looking to get into a 461. More the merrier. If we can help by sharing words / photos of what we've experienced or done over the past year - more than happy to do so. Regards JOHN Edited by John Allison - 02 February 2006 at 18:11 |

Dooh Franko - sorry about the wasted comments on chart table! Must have been a dislexic moment. But yes on the other hand, the cockpit table is actually very functional. Works well in use when anchored and up etc, looks even nicer at night with downlight on suffusing it with light. It is very strongly built and doubles as hand and foot brace when sailing - plus we do place loose items into the top as a secured recessed area is formed when the sides are dropped. Nothing falls out even at a high angle of heel. But we also added a single pocket for a winch handle in the cokpit - which I often find stuffed with a tube of sun tan creme, and we do tend to throw loose shoes into the open front of the two rope lockers. Plus knowing our crew like the odd cleansing ale, we had a dedicated can / cup holder custom made in stainless which is bolted to the table set up just below the plotter pod. It even takes wine bottles. Sorry about my earlier mistread........... JOHN Edited by John Allison - 06 February 2006 at 06:41 |

Actually John, it wasn't wasted typing at all. I was/am very interested to hear
how you got on with the chart table not being a separate dedicated unit like other boats. Infact as a prospective 461 owner I am reading all your posts with great interest (esp. your blog!) Keep 'em coming! David |
