Hi All

I have finally got to the point where I am about to leave on my epic venture (don't laugh, its an epic adventure to me) from the south coast of the UK to the west coast of Scotland. Just to remind you all I am doing this for myself but also for AICR (association for international cancer research).

I have not only been working on the boat but I have also been doing a weekly ish Blog which if any of you are interested can be found at www.sailingtoscotland.blogspot.com So far its all about preparing the boat for the journey etc and as of next Saturday the 30th April it will be about the sailing / journey. I launch from Port Solent at 10:00am April 30th. You can read all about the trials and tribulations so far. My Itinerary is below and if any MyHanse members are around during these times or are based at the marinas I would love to meet you all.

Please have a look!

Duke, All the very best of luck in this major trip of yours.
When leaving Milford Haven to Ireland, the South East corner of Ireland has a great little Harbour called Kilmore Quay that will be right for you.

Good luck and I for one will be keeping an eye on your blog, and will get a number of beers ready if you manage to get to Barmouth.....
Enjoy.

Bon Voyage Duke. Unfortunately, our paths will not cross as I do not expect to be in the West Country and Isles of Scilly until June.

Richard, I will definitely follow your blog. I like the idea of making a journey a story that deserves to be told. You seem to have a good perspective on what is achievable and I think you have made a great choice of boat to achieve your goals.

I also think that Freddie will be more than capable of adjusting to life aboard.

Good luck!

Johan

I've read your blog and itinery and it got me thinking of what last minute advice I would offer:
Weather:
You have Navtex so you will be able to read and reread the inshore forecasts. Try to spot trends because because the inshore areas are large and it is so very easy to be misled. For example, you will hear F6 or 7 mentioned, but it may only apply at one end of the area or it may not be occurring til "later" which is more than 12 hours away. Reading the forecasts for adjacent areas will help to get a moving picture of probability. Navtex often gives a fuller forecst than the Coastguard broadcast, but some Coastguards also tell you a bit more of what is happening in their location, but this is getting rarer as Coastguards have been told that they are not forecasters! When you reach Plymouth, you will have the good fortune to be able to hear the very detailed evening forecasts from BBC Radio Cornwall which used to be around 6.30pm and repeated around 7 or so.

You mention possibly going to Isles of Scilly. We go there every year. About 6 hours from Newlyn. Hugh Town on St Marys is a very safe harbour with visitors buoys, but open to and very bouncy in F5 and above nortwesterlies. Strong winds and gales from other directions are well sheltered. Therefore, you only need an 8 hour weather window to go across, ignore tides and use your engine if necessary and as long as the forecast for future days does not include NW, you will be ok. Use 2 mooring lines and put two turns around the mooring buoy shackle to prevent " sawing" (I use 1m 8mm chain with 9m 12mm nylon tails as one of my lines when tying to buoys).

Cheers
