The SW pump on my D2-75F has developed a slow salt water leak at higher RPMs, from the shaft seal in the rear.  Just a few drops here and there, but it's time to swap it for its spare, and a rebuild on the old one.

Looks like it's four bolts and two hoses, but oddly, the spare has a threaded shaft. See pic below.

Anyone swap these out on our Volvos? There a trick to working with the threaded shaft?

Hi there,
Your engine raw water pump is gear driven.
So, either you purchase the pump drive gear, key, nut and washer, so that your spare pump is a complete unit.
Or, you will need to swap the drive gear from your original pump, once removed from the engine, on to your new pump.
To loosen the drive gear clamp the grear in a vice with soft jaws, so as to not damage the gear teeth, remove the nut and you may require a puller to remove the gear from the shaft.
If the nut is a self locking nut you should always renew it.
Good luck.

hi
On the smaller Volvo engine you can change that seal whiteout remove the pump if you are in a emergency
First use a small screwdriver to pull out the old seal
Then you have to polish the shaft using 1200grit sandpaper
I use a plastic tube making a tool that goes over the shaft with a grove to insert a small price of the sandpaper ones it’s over the larger diameter of the shaft
Only circling that tool so all sanding is circular on the shaft
Then you have to clean well
Second you apply Vaseline grease and a cut a plastic bag in to a sheet that you can have at least 2full turns over the shaft to protect the new seal
Put grease outside the plastic
Put the new seal in boiling water and put it on the shaft in a turning way so the plastic is not unwrap
Then use a tube same diameter as the seal to hammer it in to place take plastic away and instal the impeller

I have done this repair on at least 6 different engines with out of leek for years still ok

Check that out if it’s possible on your engine
As if a leak occurs it will take place when you least expect

I do have all parts for this repair in my boat al time

Regards jonas
