So after having got to know us for two weeks it was time introduce Leonardo to Emilia. Yesterday we stayed aboard overnight and Leonardo seemed to love it. Because of the ice we couldn´t go sailing but stay tuned and you will know how he takes it when the day comes!

Here he is with Isabel who is writing an entry in the log book about the event.

Great photos Johan. Isabel is looking very grown up! I don't have any experience of cats on board apart from a certain "Mrs Chippy" - a disturbingly realistic fake stuffed cat that has freaked out several unsuspecting visitors. (As you may know Mrs Chippy was actually a male cat that was taken on board Ernest Shackleton's ship Endurance on his 1914-1917 Antarctic expedition by the ship's carpenter (Harry "Chippy" McNish)).

We used to have a dog - a large Golden Retriever - who adored coming on board. She was always very excited at the prospect of a sail that on one occasion she jumped for the boat from the pontoon but missed and fell into the sea. Not good as she wasn't wearing her lifejacket at the time (it was on board). I had to haul her head up by her ears so that I could get a grip of her chest. A large, wet retriever is a big lift. She was fine - but the "wet dog" smell pervaded the boat - and the car - for a long while. I'm sure you remember this smell from Stampe.

Out cats were very averse to swimming - or going into water - so maybe you won't face the same problem.

Best of luck with Leonardo - a fine looking creature - when he has his first "sea trials"

Thanks, Richard.

The life jacket was always good on Stampe. With the handle on the back, you could always lift him off the sea chart when he was sleeping on it. He never fell overboard while underway except for one occasion mentioned in this thread. It was when there was no wind and I decided to inflate the dinghy to take pictures of Emilia. To this day we don´t know if he fell or if he jumped but I was very surprised when he came swimming towards me. At that point I didn´t know that I had actually captured when he went overboard in one of the pictures!

We are planning to get Leonardo a life jacket for very much the same reason Stampe wore one.

The season 2019 had a slow start. The ice went early this year but this weekend is the first we are out sailing. I usually sail the very day after the ice goes away (and even a day too early as it were..) but every year does not have to be the same, does it?

I gave up on using a life jacket on Leonardo. We practiced at home but he just felt over when using it.

Here he is seen in one of the places he had made his own.

Johan,
Erik Nyström, the author of the excellent guide to Swedish northern harbours, Norrlandskust, used to sail with two cats on board, I'm sure he'll be more than happy to give you some advice.
