Has anyone changed the exhaust system on their earlier model 370e? Mine has a DPC waterlock (at least 12 litre capacity)with what looks like 90mm exhaust hose. The engine is a 40hp (29kw) Yanmar. The waterlock has never failed in any way, but neither has it ever been quiet. The exhaust noise is a very distinctive Barp-Barp sort of sound which is OK for short distances but annoying if you have to motor hard for any length of time. This is not perculiar to my boat - it is the same on other 370's of the same vintageThere is limited space and it would be difficult to fit an alternative large capacity waterlock.I am reluctant to fit a smaller capacity as I really have no idea how much water remains in the system when the engine is stopped.
I was considering adding a Vetus muffler in the line between the existing waterlock and the outlet. They claim it adds virtually nothing to back pressure. Feedback appreciated. Hawkeye

Hi Hawkeye
I have a 371 equipped with the same engine and have the same problem. A friend of mine is having a 370 with the smaller engine (29HP) and it makes mush less noise. I think it has to do with the very large exhaust hose diameter (90mm). The larger diameter the lower humming frequency from the pipe ( I guess). I have added a Vetus mufler right behind the Waterlock but it did only lower the nose marginally. Now I will try to move the mufler backwards to about 1 meter from the exhaust pipe termination and see if it helps. Best Regards Hans Peter |

Hi
I installed on my 370 with 40 HP Yanmar a Vetus muffler approx 1 m before the end of the exhaust pipe with the objective to reduce the 'dark' sound coming from the exhaust at cruising speed . However , the result was very disappointing as the muffler did not change the sound level.....Maybe an other glorious idea would help , but certainly not the muffler . |

I know my engine is very noisy in the cabin ; but not too bad on deck.
Had never considered the exhaust a problem. I would love more sound insulation down stairs ; but have no good idea how to move forward. If I work on the exhaust will the cabin be less noisy ? Simon |

I also installed the mufler from vetus , but tought it did not work as much as i would , but sailing with it since 2007 .
Last time i met someone without it on a 370 with the 40 hp engine i noticed it makes more noise than ours.... Somit actually does work! Greetings Marcel |

Did you check your air filter? Worth changing if it is a very simple foam one. |

It is specific to the 40hp engine, the 30hp one we have is quiet but the 40hp on the 400 we chartered had this noise.
The outlet pipe diameter is too big for the water flow so the noise is not silenced sufficiently by the water. A solution would be to put a reducer somewhere in line so the gas has to pass through the water. I suggest a local marine engineer for advice, i suspect its any easy job.

I Had the same problem on my 39 HP Hanse 370.
The problem is that this engine is sharing exhaust elbow with a larger engine and that is why the exhaust is so big. Be aware that it is 75 mm. (NOT 90 MM) Hoses and pipes is almost always measured on the inside. I have installed a Vetus NLPG75 in the aft void space. This silencer is also a combined gooseneck and muffler so it is installed installed where the hose loop used to be. N.B. I will have to improve my support one day!! How did it work? Well I have to say it is no miracle cure. Initial I did not think it mad much difference, But after sailing a few trips it has defenitely improved. It has remove the metalic echoing noise from the cockpit. And I have noticed that I can hear the engine and gear more than I could before. So next thing for me is to insulate the engine compartment. After that I might try and do some more on the exhaust. Brgds Thomas Hansen
