Our German dealer of HVG proposed a feathering propeller of SPW
instead of the folding type of Flexofold for our new 508. The propulsion should be a lot more effective (30% ??!!)
Any experiences?

I had a three bladed feathering propeller on my last boat (not Hanse) which was shaft driven. Loved the prop. Loads of thrust and control in astern or ahead and FAST under sail ;-)
Am upgrading the current factory fitted 2 blade prop on my 418 this winter for a three blade flex-o-fold.

One of the UK yottie mags ran a test of props which was very positive about the flex-o-fold. What I'm hoping to gain is some more thrust (particularly into wind / waves) and ultimately some increased speed under both power and sail. Having weighed everything up the flex-o-fold seemed the best for achieving my specific aims. I was put off a feathering one for this boat as it could still potentially pick up rope / debris & pot marker lines when feathered and I figured a folded one wouldn't provide a "hook" for such lines. We have a lot of rubbish in the sea where I sail :( For some reason (to my eye) the folder looked more natural on a saildrive than the feathering.....but don't ask me to explain why!

Hi Matt1,
We usually drove at 2300 RPM with the 470 and the Flexofold prop which is a reasonable RPM for a turbo diesel (Travel speed in flat water 7.2 kn) For the 508 and more thrust with the feathered propeller we might be able to go down to 2100 RPM. I was told that lower RPMs are not good for a turbo diesel engine.
I had the same retention thinking of being entangeled more often by lines etc. compared to a folding prop. The point is that SPW is proposing a new type with a better shock absorber which is important for the bearings and whole saildrive.
