Hi Everyone,

i decided to change my chain for a 10 mill instead of the 8 mill on my 415 and had to change the windlass to a bigger one. Now i have a problem with the chain going into the locker when raising anchor, chain has to be constantly adjusted by hand as the locker is not deep enough for the chain to freefall by itself.

anyone here who did change for a 10 mill chain?
Any advice on how to solve the problem?

much appreciated

Not on a 415, but we had a similar problem on our 350, the chain locker was just too small for the length of. chain we needed in the Mediterranean, and it had to be continually hand fed away from the windlass when lifting the anchor.

OAfter a bit of investigation we discovered a void below the chain locker, so we cut the bottom off it and extended it down to just above the waterline. Also we replaced the windlass with a deck mounted Lofrans model. This allows us to have 75m of 8mm chain and has never required any assistance when lifting the anchor since we did the modification 3 years ago.

interesting solution, two questions:

1. When you extended the locker to the waterline, how did you make the drain from there?

2. Could you send a photo of the setup with the external deck mounted Lofran? that is something i am considering also.

much appreciated

We left the original drain in place and drilled an additional one on the other side of the bow, slightly lower down. It drains OK, and whilst I thought it might look a bit odd, I never notice it.

I am afraid photos will be a bit difficult, the boat is in Greece and we have just come home for the winter, will be happy to post next April .

We cut the anchor locker lid in two, giving us a broadly triangular piece at the front, and a rectangular piece behind. The front piece was reinforced and glassed into place, the new windlass was mounted on this, drilled so that the chain can drop straight down into the deepest part of the locker. We also put a small circular hatch in the front so that we can see what is happening. The other part of the lid was left hinged to give a larger if indirect access to the chain storage, and of course to the water tank inlet and the windlass control.

Any other questions, I am happy to help.

Hi Bob

seems all the anchoring 350 users have the same issues...
I also checked the space below the original chain locker and started planning to include this space.
But I would like to keep the windlass more or less in place, needs a bit of a correction as it is not running the chain straight to our goose neck.
Would be looking forward for pictures as  well.
Where in Greece are you currently, we are staying in Porto Heli.

By the way , ever thought of having a bowthruster ? Playing with it as well, but not yet convinced to drill big holes in the boat.

Hi Ulrich,

Starshine is currently out of the water at Preveza, and we are travelling out to join her at the beginning of April - just in time to pay the new cruising tax! I will take some photos then and maybe start a new 350 thread with them.

Our plan is to sail down to the Corinth Canal and through into the Aegean before coming back up into the Ionian, maybe wave as we go past? Or indeed you are welcome to inspect the new chain locker in person.

Hi Bob

thanks for the quick reply.
We will be at Porto Heli end of April , paying tax as well Ouch . Hopefully that tax might be used to finalize some of the marinas still under construction Ermm
Looking forward to the pics or to see it live.

Have a great time sailing down, just one tip, go around Lefkada westwards, its great.

Just finished refitting the windlass to accommodate a 10 mill chain and trying to manage the 80 meters i have to fit into the locker.
Partial success, 50 fit fine but last 30 need to be pushed to the side a bit. Second part of the hatch is being finished and
hope to have a video of how it works soon.

expensive solution but 10mm stainless chain will coil and bunch much better/tighter and give you the best solution.
