Hi Nigel,
Below is some independent test results on anchors. I have been reading everything I could find on anchors for the past 2 years & Cruising Helmsman has also published many good articles on the subject. The one rider is that there is no perfect anchor for every situation one might encounter. I also had a number of conversations with Rex Francis of Anchor Right who design & manufacture the Sarca anchors. I already have the thumbs up from the Admiral after this short time. Regular multiple anchoring attempts does not do anything for good relations with the Admiral on the yacht. Best Regards, Mike |

Hi Mike,
Can I ask how much chain you have? I am about to increase my chain from 30 to 60 metres and replace the Delta 16kg with a Rocna 20kg. This is for an east coast trip this winter. Interested in your opinion. Cheers

Hi Steve, My yacht,
"Elara" came with 30m chain & 20m of rope. Not enough for Sydney
Harbour at New Year or some parts of the Hawkesbury River area that I frequent.
As part of my anchor upgrade I have added another 30+m of chain so now have
60+m of chain & 20m of rope. You are making the right decisions for your
trip so that you can sleep well no matter what the conditions. But you still
need to be careful once you get into the Whitsundays where you may be anchoring
in coral debris on the shores of some of the islands. Enjoy your trip.
Best Regards, Mike |

Hi Mark and Catherine. I know this is an old thread but I installed a 20kg Rocna on my 385 earlier in the year prior to a cruise on the Australian east coast(ongoing). I’m very impressed with the holding power of the anchor and can recommend it for the 385. It fits without modification to the bow roller fitting. A slight modification to the roller allows
the pin to fit in front of the anchor to hold it securely. I also installed 60m of 8mm G4 chain and haven’t noticed any weight issue. I can provide photographs and further details if it’s of further interest. |

Hi All,
We used the Delta on Breathe for the first time last week. The anchorage was a well known location where the CQR on our old boat set first time every time. It took three attempts for the Delta to set with the anchor dragging when applying engine reverse to dig it in. We eventually got it to set by using a very low level of engine power, and building power slowly, but did not have a lot of confidence in the amout of grip available. Is that a typical experience with the Delta? Thanks Gordon |

Hi Gordon
The way you describe is the way we have set the anchor from Port Phillip and around N.E.Tasmania and up to Cairns. Gently reverse and gradually increase power. We still just use the 16 kg Delta that came with the boat. It has been adequate, but that is all. They are a basic middle performing anchor that at 16 kilos is at the lower end for a boat set up with sprayhoods and other wind catching gear. I stuck with mine because of it fitting into the bowsprit. Once set I haven't had a problem except on really bad ground. My spare is a weed and rock specialist anchor, but I will definitely get something like the rocna described above when we go on our next extended cruise for a primary anchor. Phil O

my problem with the rocna is that it looks like the hoop will foul the furling drum on my furlstrom gennaker, do you use a furlstrom Steve?

Hi I am looking at a Rocna 20kg for my 385, as next season we’re circumnavigating British Isles. Experience over the last three years is the Delta is ok in sand or mud, but any forage present and it simply slides.
If you have pics you can share that would be much appreciated, don’t really want to modify the bow too much, but small amount quite acceptable. Interested to hear from anyone regarding the Rocna hoop fowling the furling gear of a Genacker. |

We have had good luck over the past year with our Mantus 35 pound stainless anchor. It fits well and never has slipped on us. Their swivel is also really good and heavy duty. I think Mantus is a great company with innovative products and everything is very high quality. Where we sail the bottom is pretty soft and muddy, so I cannot say how it would do in other situations. |
