I found some standing water in the compartment below the aft cabin, starboard side. I didn’t taste salt, so it probably came from the water heater. What I am wondering about is why the water was standing instead of finding its way to the low part of the bilge, where the bilge pickup is. Should there be holes somewhere and they are just gunked up? I’m kind of tempted to drill some holes that would lead to the bilge, but would like to know other peoples experience first!

Hi Gina, do NOT cut any holes into the stringers/beams. These are structural item which make up the "backbone" of your boat. Attach a hose to the pressure safety valve of your water heater and route it into a small canister or soft drink bottle. BR

Install a small expansion Tank to your watersystem, and you will never ever have any water from the waterheater in your boat again!

Have you thought this could be water that has come in via the rear lockers when washing down as the outer lip on these is not high. Depending on the fit out there are several holes in the rear bulkhead where water could get through to the area you mention. As others have said you don't want to drill holes as there are a few already for hoses and wires, so it is better to just mop up any water nearer the source rather than weaken the structure.
