Was idling away a few minutes looking at the historical data on the 415 (It was too windy to sail yesterday!) and noticed the displacement was listed as 8,900kg whereas the replacement 418 (essentially the same boat) is listed as 9,800kg. Keel displacements are broadly the same and I think I am right in saying they both have balsa cored hulls and decks...so a typo? or?

Supposedly the same but a different way of weighing them now to include full fuel tank, so much water and whatever else. This is what we are told by agent.

Hmm...not sure that explains it. The RCD compliant handbook lists the empty displacement as 9,946kg (with std draft keel) and then gets the displacement to 13,171kg with fuel, water, crew, dinghy and stores. Fuel and water are listed as 663kg at 95% full.

Surely that has to be wrong?
The 663kgs for the fuel and water sounds OK but that leaves over 2,500kgs for crew, dinghy and stores. Hard to believe, even with a crew of 10 heavy guys!

I think its the way the RCD mandate that you count displacement. The handbook lists it as follows;
Basic equipment 200kg Optional Equip 1,132kg (this must be with EVERY extra ticked!) Liquids 663kg Dinghy 30kg Stores and cargo 350kg Provisions 100kg 10 crew (it's RCD rating max) 750kg Obviously I don't have the manual for the 415 so can only compare brochure displacement for the design weight which appeared nearly 1,000kg different. |
