At the end it was decided to replace the lead part of the keel with a new one. It took Hanse just five weeks to deliver it. All bolts and nuts were reused and we mounted the Keel-Pro protection device. After the 2020 season it feels good.

Hi Marcel,

BÄSK is also from 2006. If you see no "rust tears" in the steel/lead joint you shouldn't be too wooried. My keel might be one of the few bad ones. If we hit the rock straight from front we would probably not have noticed. The bad lead was discovered firts when the keel was taken apart.

If rocks are common in your waters, and accidents happen, I would recommend to mount a Keel-Pro. It's like a rubber bumper applied in the front of the keel. Google it!

we have also the 370 and have grounded the boat a few times.
Seriously also with 7 knots and no damage so farr.
The boat is from 2006, and no cracks , no rust , not at the keel hull joint and not at the lead steel joint.
What year is your boat Borjebus?

I just want to send out a warning if you have a keel where the upper part is made of steel and the lower part is made of lead.

Last summer I went aground in a 45 degree angle with a speed of 2-3 knots. It didn’t feel too bad but when we hauled the boat, we saw a big crack where steel and lead meet. This was nothing we couldn't fix ourselves, so we contacted a recommended yard. Now they have taken the keel off and apart, see picture.

This was nothing we, or the yard, had expected:
- The steel part (upper right corner) looks good.
- The top part of the lead is extremely corroded and far from solid.

The lead part of the keel needs to be sent away to a casting specialist to get the top rebuilt with pure lead. Luckily the insurance company has accepted this.

How has this happened?
According to the yard it’s because when the keel was casted not pure lead was used. Floating lead is heavy and i.e. iron is lighter and comes towards the surface (= the top of the keel). At some time, a little bit of water has entered into the steel/lead joint and the iron has started to rust and made the upper part of the “lead” keel softer. When we hit the rock a little bit from the side the whole joint cracked.

Did we see this coming?
Maybe, because when applying antifouling paint, we could see a couple of small “rust tears” coming from the joint. So, if you see “rust tears” on your keel, take it as a serious warning and plan to do something about it.

When the keel is repaired, we will add a Keel-Pro to limit the damages from possible rocks :) and we will also replace the old Simrad plotter and GPS with a new Vulcan 9. Aside of bad seamanship the reason for going aground was that the fix-point disappeared from the plotter.
