Hi Paul,
Yes the corrosion comes from the raw water side. In the casing just before the face that secures to the exhaust there is a small recess that the salt water sits in, this can be seen in the 1st photo where the yellow deposits are.

I've been concerned from the outset that there is no pencil engine anode in the raw water side of the heat exchanger of the D1-30.  Do you think that the corrosion emanates from the raw side?  Frank - I believe you sail in fresh water so salt corrosion can't be the explanation.  Has anyone got any ideas what all D1-30 owners can do to reduce the risk of these problems?  Regards,  Paul

Ian,
I had the same issue with my D1-30F. After leaving port I got the overtemperature alarm.
Stopped the engine and checked water filter ( ok) and changed impeller (ok ). Suspected the thermostat as the culprit?. No wind at all!  So Friend towed me back and a mech checked the engine next day : No cooling fluid! Nothing in the bilge ??
He is the Volvo specialist and services every year 100 - 200 engines. He never had a failure on the circulation pump.

He finally found a small leak ( about one drop every minute creeping along the engine housing ) from the circulation pump. So we refilled the cooling fluid and I made it back to my home port. Engine compartment cozy warm apparently let it evaporate over time. I therefore supect that this leak was unnoticed for months or even seasons. I admit that I checked the oil levels on engine and saildrive but never the cooling fluidEmbarrassed

Difficulty to source the pump "hey, it never fails", but the yard finally found a new original one.
Problem solved, no more drips, nice clean oil absorbing mat under the engine is still pure white after 5 motor hours. Bad part is that the Volvo pump price was 730.- € Angry

Hi All,
To finish off the toppic
After extensive testing, there were two problems that manifested at the same time. One the head gasket. Not so simple to change. Secondly the casing of the heat exchanger had corroded (so I was informed this is a known design fault of VolvoPenta)

Photo 1 was after removal, you can see salt deposits
Photo 2 The pin prick leak after cleaning and taking the material back to something substantial so it could be welded The black line at the bottom of the unit is the hole. This unit is 7 yrs old.

hi

Just a random thought Remove the reservoir from its mountings fill it up again and then lower it until it stops losing fluid - this should give you the level at which the leak is accuring =?

Hi All
Thanks to all of you who  have made valued comments and suggestions on this topic

It was suggested (somewhere) that it maybe the saltwater raw pump and I did have a very small drip from it, so two days ago I took the pump off and it is now being serviced. So I can not run the engine. I filled up the coolant reservior and to my surpise in the morning it was empty. Here are three photos

Taken at 1334

Taken at 1341

Taken at 1642

This is the third time the reservoir has been filled. ShockedShockedThe engine can not be ran as no saltwater pump. There is no evidence of coolant anywhere to be seen even been over the side and looked at the exhaust outlet.

What I dont understand is the liquid is below what I belive is the feed pipe into the heat exchanger ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused shown by red arrow.

Any suggestions welcome

Hi Steven,
Thanks for your valued comments and suggestions

When the engine is running there is no white smoke or steam from the exhaust, it is how it has been since getting the boat a year ago. We have even taken samples of the exhaust outlet water.

Good luck

Hi Mschesser, thanks for your support and comments

I have changed the oil and filtter and there was no milkiness in the oil, the oil filler cap had no signs (droplets) of water on it.
Since changing the oil there has been no raise in oil level.
Cheers again for your suggestions

as per last post regards head gasket either leaking into oil or is there white smoke/steam coming out the exhaust if you have a head gasket leak it can leak into oil or exhaust outlet.
