good morning all, we had the unfortunate event of our main halyard slipping off the sheave yesterday and our main getting stuck up. Assuming the sheaves are cooked so going to replace so it doesn’t happen again. Anyone done this job on a sparcraft? If so, can you do it up the mast or do you need a crane? And what size are the sheaves for all halyards?

Hi,
You can do it in the mast. Note, you need two sheaves. 48510801525 - Delrin Sheave 80x15

is that the Sparcraft part number? Just had a google and couldn’t find any 80mm Delrin sheaves. Hopefully find a UK supplier of those.

great! Thank you for this. Also very happy they can be replaced while up the mast. I’m assuming go up on kite halyard and Jib halyard for a secondary. You’d have a bit of a fall of Kite halyard went of course but less than falling to the deck right

the problem using jib halyard is you have to pull upwards to get to mast head. So, if Spinnaker halyard fails you drop at thest twice the distance from jib sheave to masthead. But as you say it would hopefully be preferable to full mast drop.
Good luck.

yeah, I think dyneema strop around the mast head when you come off the topping lift as secondary.

Gerrit,
When you mention 2 sheaves, you refer to the other sheave being the sheave for the topping lift, correct? I.e., better replace them both. Was there need to replace the Clevis pin, was it worn (in line with a similar post about a 545 recently) ? Did anybody replace the 2 forward sheaves yet? I guess they see less wear, the jib halyard stays tensioned most of the time and doesn’t see as much movement as the main halyard. These seem more tricky to replace while being up in a bosuns chair. Thanks, Peter
