I personally wouldn’t either. I was anchored in the Bay of Siracusa last autumn during the medicane that lasted 4 days with winds reaching 60+ knots and there were no issues with the chain. As you know our 505’s/508’s have high freeboards and there is a tendency to ‘sail’ at anchor, which increases forces acting on the chain. If anything i would opt for a heavier anchor…

I personally would not. I’m US-based, so I have 3/8 inch chain which is very close to 10 mm. The safe working load of my chain is 2450kg, and the breaking load is 7350kg. Now ask yourself, what sort of anchor/bottom combination could support that sort of load? I’d say not many. What about your anchor swivel, cleats, bow roller, etc? I think something else would let go before the chain. In my estimation, the chain size is adequate for these boats. Furthermore, reports of non-neglected anchor chain breaking is exceptionally rare. I would worry about something else. Just my two cents.

Recently when we moored in a marina, a helping hand looking closer at our yacht, suggested to exchange the anchor chain from the standard 10mm to 12mm diameter. He claimed to be a boatbuilder and sailor understanding his business. What we did from the beginning was exchanging the standard 12V 1000W windlass with a 24V 2000 W typ (Lewmar CPX 4) with a rope drum on top for the mooring lines. This surely is a good windlass and strong enough for a 15 t yacht but thinking of taking in a 12mm chain with no possibility to do it manually by handle in an emergency (failure of windlass) makes me wonder if possible. Any ideas? Edited by tobo2 - 16 May 2022 at 16:12 |
