Hello friends, here is a odd query.
Since buying my 430 I never questioned the main sheet rigging, but yesterday as I was installing a Walder boom brake I found that my main sheet was not rigged as many others. Let's start at the mast foot. My main sheet went from the mast base block to a block on the boom mounted just aft of the vang. This meant the line was almost parallel with the vang. Then the sheet went to another block further aft, before turning down to the block on the coach roof. That mounting position just aft of the vang looks like the perfect place to mount the boom brake. I went online looking for images for inspiration and found that other 430's were rigged differently than mine. From the mast base block the sheet goes to a block just aft of the gooseneck then along the boom to the block where it turns down to the coach roof. This arrangement was in most all online pictures of 430's. My question to you all is: how is yours rigged, which way do you consider better and is there chaffe as the sheet passes the vang mounting? The chaffe issue is my biggest concern. |

I know that youre all out enjoying the sailing, but if you have a moment. Please let me know either how you fitted a walder boom brake or how you have your main sheet rigged. Thanks |

Hi, my main sheet was originalt as seen on the pictures you have seen. The first block on the boom was fastened close to the mast. I moved it more aft in hope to reduce the fiction and fastened the boom brake at the same positions. Not ideal, but it works.

thankyou Lykke. I did consider mounting the boom brake as you have to the block. Was there an issue with line chafe as the sheet passed the vang?

No, I did not notice any chafe on the main sheet before I moved it.

Is that a Wichard boom brake? I looked at those & couldn’t find one that works with a 50SqM main. Range seemed to top out at 40SqM. Have you found a version that does? Could you share a link please? Thanks

Yes, it is this one that is ment for main sails below 40 m2. It might not be able to fully cope with the large main sail on our 430, but it is far better than nothing. (It might require early reefing as we usually do to prioritize comfort over speed).
It has helped us for at least three seasons so far.

Thanks Lykke. Useful feedback. I have preventers set up both sides for use on longer legs. However, a boom brake for situations where the preventers aren’t being used would be handy.
