During August I moved my 370 from the South of France where we bought it in July to Northern Crete, a distance of 1350 nms. My engine is the 29hp version. During this trip we did a lot of motoring & motor/sailing. For the first 24 hours we ran the engine at 3000 rpm to achieve 6 knts & on refilling calculated a consumption of over 5 litres per hour. Later restricting the revs to 2200 the result was just over 2 litres per hour. These figures were achieved in fairly flat water as most of the time there was little wind. I'd be interested to know if these results are in line with other people's experience.

I copy from a specialized site:

Diesel engines use approximately 1 gal per hour per 20 HP developed
Fuel consumed is proportional to the power developed
Power developed is approximately proportional to the cube of the engine revs
Hence fuel consumed is proportional to the cube of the engine revs

If you ½ the revs you reduce the power & hence fuel consumption by 1/8

Assume a sailing boat has 40 hp engine? Max revs 3800 rpm
At 3800rpm developes 40 hp ( consumes 2 gal per hour )
If normal cruising revs are 3000 rpm ( 80% of max )
Power developed 80% X 80% X 80% = 51.2% of the max

ie 0.51 x 40 = 20.4 hp

Fuel consumed 1 gal per hour

You can easily carry out your own calculations. Your results are consistent with the theory.

We run at just less than 2 litres per hour in the 385, 29 hp Volvo, at 2100 revs and 5.5 knots plus or minus tide
385 ubulukutu sail number GBR 3350L in Turkey and Greece with Mark and Catherine

The D2-40 (40HP) in High Time consumes around 2.3 L/hr at 2000rpm.

We run 2.8 l/hr with the Yanmar 40 HP engine at 2400 rpm , 6.9 knts with a KIWI prop on our 370 ; average over approx 250 miles . Obviously at lower revs , lower consumption.

We have a 370 with 29hp Yanmar, with kiwi prop at 3000rpm we are lucky to get 5 knots in calm water more like 4 or less in rough seas. ( With very clean hull) How on earth do you get 6.9 knots??

Hi Pride of Waterford,

I think there is a misunderstand somewhere! We achieved 6 knots at 3000 rpm not 6.9 knots. That would be a dream. Our hull was just antifouled. We usually achieved about 4.75-5.00 knots at 2200 to 2500 revs. The prop is a fixed 2 blade which I assume is the original factory fit.

Not impressed with your specialist site
Brunton Auto prop
My 19HP Volvo uses 2 litres per hour at 2000 revs,= 5.9 -6.0 Kts (That is less than half gallon)
2.3 litres per hour at 2500 revs (nearly max revsI can get on this prop)= 6.5-6.8kts flat sea ( speed confirmed by GPS in canals with no current)

My old fixed volvo prop gave
1.66 litres per hour at 2500 revs =  6kts ( average over 500 hours of use over 2 years  in all conditions from canals to v rough water)
 at max revs ( 3500) i could get 7kts
That is better fuel consumption-- which is contrary to Bruntons advertised claims

Nothing like your figures

My 2007 370e has a 2 blade Flex-o-Fold prop (don't know what size) and yesterday it was running at 5.5 kts @ 2400rpm. Hull was anti-fouled 18months ago. WOT (3600 rpm) will have me running at about 7.5 kts. Over the 7 years of ownership my fuel average is 2.7 l/hr- mostly in and out of harbour below 2500 rpm. I have the standard 29hp Yanmar engine.
