Good morning sailors,

Here comes my first post after checking the forum for quite some time because we were pondering on the question whether or not to buy a new Hanse315.

Finally, after quite some waiting time, our new Hanse 315 "ARDEA" was delivered at the beginning of August. She replaces our beloved Etap 26i. We are from Germany, out boat, however, is located in The Netherlands and we are sailing the IJsselmeer, the North Sea including its interesting tidal waters, The Chanel and hopefully the Baltic Sea and maybe beyond.

So far, we are quite happy with the sailing performance, love the cross-over-sail on the endless furler, and considering layout, space, comfort, we are very happy with our decision. When looking for a new boat, we also had other boats in mind : Winner 9.0, a beautifully built boot, quite sporty, wich turned out to be still a bit too small for our purpose; Dufour 310 (not the very latest model but the one before), which is a nice little boat but did not quite convince us and our dream boat was the (semi-)custom Luffe 3.6. The Luffe, however, was out of our price range after we discussed modifications of the keel and some other options with the builder.

Unfortunately, we have a list of issues that need to be fixed by Hanse, some of which are a bit cumbersome. I am hoping to get some hints regarding a few things by the forum but I also hope to share some thoughts and useful solutions based on a long sailing experience with you.

Looking forward to meeting you on the water!

Good afternoon ARDEA,

What kind of issues did you encounter? I am really curious as i might aspect a delivery next spring aswell.

My first thought would be that your dealer will fix those  issues within the guarantee period?

Sorry for being so late with my reply...I was a bit overcommitted at work and also had to hoover around our boat to get things straigth. It seems common with production boats these days that not everything is perfectly finished ore even technically OK. So here comes a short list of things that needed to be fixed. By the way: So far we had no problem that the dealer (West Yachting) accepted our claims. However, sometimes communication was quite slow...

1. The fittings for the bathing-ladder at the bathing-plattform are not screwed in properly and came loose during normal summer use. Will be fixed in the winter

2. The fresh-water indicator does not work properly. Will be exchanged in the winter and seems to be a common issue with the new generation of sensors in the tank

3. The depth-sounder gave up to show anything after 3 days. The whole sensor (depth, speed, temperature) will be replaced. This seems to be a common problem with the latest Arimar sounder

4. The GRP-frame between pantry and heads (the one on the floor) has a crack and shows signs of a non-professional repair. This will need some serious work in winter and is the most disappointing point.

5. The sprayhood needs to be fixed since it is not made well (some stitches come loose.)

6. When we took ARDEA out of the water for the winter, we found the outer rubber of the saildrive not sufficiently glued to the hull. It was abslolutely loose and needs to be replaced. Clearly a mistake of the builder, they obviously did not degrease the rubber and then glued it to the antifouling...

Finally, we had ordered a cover for the jib wich still has not arrived (now in December).

This sounds like a lot of issues (there are also some more, minor issues like spots of glue on glas etc. wich I leave out). However: The dealer is supportive - if sometimes slow - and we can fix those issues in our home harbour.

And now comes the surprise: We are still very happy with the boat. Sailing performance is great, with some modifications (we had additional hanging lockers installed in the salon and some other minor mods) it perfectly fits our needs (a couple with occasional guests).

I hope you will only have minor issues with your boat. Sorry again for the late reply. See you on the water!

Hallo, wie geht es dir Ardea,
I can only offer advice on bonding the rubber cover between bottom of hull and saildrive.
Do not be tempted to use cheap contact adhesives use only Bostik  2402, Clean hull back to gel coat lightly abrade, and abrade the rubber in the area to be bonded. Mix and aply the adhesive to Bostik reccomendations.
If you have to use boat yard you may need to give then instructions, they may use inferior contact/cheap adhesive. Me? I only trust my own skill!
This bostic grade is used successfully for many years  to build RIBS for our Lifeboat service and it works. It is also the reccomended adhesive in Volvo Penta SD manuals.

We found affixing these rubber gaiters challenging, and after three failures in about 6 years we gave up. On the last haulout we fabricated a more robust solution that will remain in place. See photo. Good luck with your new boat!

Dear all, vielen Dank!
Ardea is on the dry and is doing well. Our motor service situated in The Netherlands is quite ingenious and they also have a big fleet of Dehler and some Hanse in our harbour. However, I will let them know about Bostik 2402 but they are accredited by Volvo and Yanmar, so I hope the are well informed. For now, we are still in the gurantee period and fixing should be left to the pros to keep the guarantee. We had a nice Etap and relied very much on our own hands. But with a new boat, things are different (at least for the first 2 years)

We will definitely try to glue it first. For some reason we are allergic to screws in the hull...

Thanks for the good hints, I keep you updated, best, Norbert

I have seen Yachts where  keen racers use filler to fair around the edge of the rubber, to reduce turbulance?  this may reduce the water flow getting under the edge of rubber,  also seen one racer who had cut into the fibre glass to drop the rubber flush with the hull. All a bit over the top. I use the Volvo recommended Bostic adhesive and it works,  One rubber I had to remove to get the SD out resulted in torn rubber and excessively difficult work to clean off the rubber firmly stuck to hull. Drilling into the hull for self tapping screws might get moisture into layup?

Hi Perry,

I have to admit that I used to be one of those racers polishing hulls...I will definitely fill the gap between the rubbers' edge and the hull. One effect is, that algae and other stuff has less chance of holding on. The organisms in our water tend to like sharp edges and corners...Even though I love sleek hulls, the racing voodoo is not really applicable for leisure use (nor is it evidence-based most of the time...;-)

Did you use heat when removing the rubber? Usually it helps, however, it has to be used with caution in order not to melt the rubber...

Best, Norbert

Hello sailor,

we are very happy with the boat despite some remaining issues. Here is a short overview:

Sails: We ordered the normal dacron sails made by Quantum and the Dyneema ropes and better sail carts for the mast. The nicely integrated self-tacking jib has been one reasons for us to buy the 315 and not the Winner 9.0 (although a very nice and sporty boat). It gives us the upwind performance we need in our waters. We also added the crossover-sails made of laminate. It is easily mounted at the bowsprit, works flawlessly and - if winds are not to high - can stay where it is for some days. The only thing I observe is that the velcro holding it together when furled seems to loos a bit of its strenght.

Engine: Yanmar 21h, folding prop. Great engine with a transmission in the saildrive working without conus. Thus a pretty robust thing (like an outboard transmission), despite the unusual sound it makes when engaging it. There is only one, maybe European issue: The diesel valve is tuned to a minimum to match requirements for environmental protection on inland waters. Since we are located at the North Sea, Yanmar will adjust this. The effect of this minimal Diesel "supply" for the engine is that when you are shifting gears, it may take 10-15 seconds until the engine cranks up the rpm. This can be very unpleasant in our pretty tight harbors or when you have to make an "emergency" stop.

Electronics: Very happy overall. As many of us, we are having issues with the fresh water sensor. It is the third one now, still not working properly. Hanse definitely needs to do something about that.

Teak: We are one of the last boats, maybe, having teak in the cockpit and on the side-decks. We had FlexiTeek on our previous boat and were only partly happy with that. It was getting too hot and whenever you had a block sliding over the deck, the black fake chaulking was "bleeding into" the fake teak. It could be easily be sanded away, but finally, we opted for teak. Looks great, feels great and we do the traditional maintenance. Water only, at the end of the winter water with a little bit of vinegar, soft brushing two or three times per season. We like it silver-grey.

Hull: So far so good, we just found some very fine cracks in the gelcoat next to the instruments at the left steering wheel. Will discuss that with the dealer.

Special options: We asked our dealer if Hanse could add more storage in the main cabin and pantry and they did. It is a custom thing provided by some carpenters sitting next the Hanse. They added 2 closed cupboards on each side of the salon, completely closing the "awkward gap" between the original cupboards and the forward bulkhead. They also added a little compartment for pots and pans underneath the stove (as all bigger Hanses have one). This makes the boat in our opinion much more complete and we have enough stowage for anything we need for our reduced boating life-style. We also added a cutting board on top of the otherwise uncovered stovetop. The one provided by Dehler in the online store for spare parts fits perfectly. I do not know Hanse does not offer this option at all. Maybe because the bigger boats mostly come with a retractable cover.

Most important, the sailing experience: This little boat sails great and is also suited for the sometimes harsher conditions in Northern Europe / North Sea. Speed is great, especially if we can use the crossover which we tend to do to a maximum of 15kn windspeed. The boat can take quite some wind and also some waves, the latter sometimes quite short and steep in our area. The boat took grate care of us in a surprising thunderstorm with heavy rain, heavy winds (35+ kn), heavy hail and lots of lightning. Think of something like a whiteish squall and you get the picture of what we had to tackle for about 30 minutes. Weather is becoming more and more unpredictable in our region... Managing the gusts, bringing down the mainsail, using engine and jib... this was all managable in the harsh conditions for my beloved one and myself Thumbs Up(both in the late 50ties, experienced sailors, though). We had some pretty good "rides" this season in constant winds, too. She behaves well, particularly with a reef in the main when winds are reaching more than 18-20kn (which is when we put in the first reef). In harbors and locks we certainly had to get used to the boat. She tends to drift a lot in stronger winds from the side. Particularly when leaving a box after being moored with the bow to the jetty and the stern to some poles (is that the right term?), she loves to starte drifting with the stern away from the wind and not turn her stern into the wind. This is a reproducible behavior and we got used to it pretty soon.

Comfort: As mentioned, we love the reduced life-style on boats. For us mainly sailing as a couple, having our adult daughter and maybe a friend with us once in a while, this boat does all we need. With some upgrade (topper) for the mattress, we normally sleep in the forepeak. We are not too tall, it has a bit more of ventilation in the summer and is more silent compared to the aft cabin, where little waves like to kiss the hull and generate a smacking sound. However, this also can be meditative...The pantry, the heads, the space, heating, natural and electric light...everything we need in a great package.

I really hope they keep that design and do not replace it by some less beautiful, less sea worthy and more chunky design.

Best, Norbert
