Hi all
Two seasons ago my hull was grit blasted to remove all the old antifoul paint. The hull is now lovely and smooth but some cracking has appeared in the filler between the hull and keel joint around the edges where I guess the blasting has disturbed the very thin bits at the edge. I have poked about with a chisel and the filler is some sort of grey very flexible material that seems go most of the way from just below the joint up to the hull getting thicker all the way to create a nice smooth curve. Does anyone know what the filler is as I need to dig a section out and replace Thanks in advance Phil |

Hi Phil, Sorry I can't tell you what the filler is but just another thought, have you checked the keel bolts? I stripped Hobo back to the base layer, then re-did the Gelcoat and antifouling and discovered I needed to tighten up the keel bolts to stop any slight movement and cracking. I never had any water ingress before or after as fortunately Hobo seems to be a very dry boat, but it looked ugly and could have developed as a problem. Since tightening the bolts I have had no issues.

Thanks Alan I have tried the keel bolts to make sure there is no movement and all are good. Just seems to be the edge peeling due to the blasting then water has got in a bit deeper. I suppose what ever the rubbery filler is it's getting a bit old 2001

Hi
I think you will find the rubbery fill has gone that way because of water saturation They fair the hull with filler then then glass over it , probably best to remove it all and make your own filler using epoxy and micro balloons. David |

The hull will sag significantly when she is out of the water and on a cradle, when lifted in slings again the as keel weight takes up, this causes fairing cracking on many production boats.
Early practice was to hard fair the keel to hull joint but now they simply uses flexible sealant which better deals with movement. I would put a big pipe on the powerbar that you are using to tighten your keel bolts (4ft plus length) and crank the keel bolts hard, you will be surprised how much more you can get out of them. |
